Nettie Maxwell Obituary

Nettie Murle Maxwell, 89, passed away Friday morning, May 22, 2015, surrounded by her family at her home in Freeland. She was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Freeland, to the late Marshall J. and Cora (Campbell) Freeland and resided in this area all of her life. Nettie Murle was a founding member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Freeland, she graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1943, and was a founding member of the Freeland Mother's Club. Nettie Murle worked as head of communications at Saginaw General/Medical Center in Saginaw in 1966 until her retirement in 1990. She loved spending time with family and was one of the first women pilots in Michigan.

On Nov. 24, 1945, Nettie Murle married her teenage sweetheart, Bernard Maxwell. He preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1993.

Nettie Murle is survived by her children, Terry (Jean) Maxwell, Elizabeth (Ray) Lee, Bernard (Karen) Maxwell Jr., Casey Maxwell, Cynthia Maxwell, Kim Maxwell, Kathleen Maxwell, Mary (Mike) Campbell, Ann (Donald) Sampson. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jean Henning. Nettie Murle was preceded in death by a son, Dion Maxwell; and a sister, Elizabeth.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Freeland. The Rev. Fr. Robert Deland will officiate. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Freeland. Friends may call at the Cunningham/Taylor Funeral Home, 310 E. Washington St., Freeland, on Tuesday from 2-8 p.m., and at church on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until time of service. A wake service will be held 7 p.m., Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider St. Agnes Catholic Church, Freeland, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the donor's favorite charity.
