Born November 19, 1933, in Alma, Michigan, to James and Thetis Stamas
Nickolas James Stamas passed away surrounded by the love of family and faith that defined his life. Nick was raised in Michigan and graduated from Howe Military School before continuing his education at Western Illinois University.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea from 1954 to 1955. On June 20, 1964, he married the love of his life, Betty (Holiday) Stamas, beginning a devoted partnership that lasted nearly 60 years.
Nick is survived by his children: Jim (Marsha) Stamas, Tony (Sara) Stamas, Angela (Gus) Wojda, and Nick (Katie) Stamas. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Nick Stamas, Jessica Stamas, Miranda Wojda, Dima Stamas, Sophie Stamas, George Stamas, and Helene Stamas. He is also survived by many dear nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and cherished friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Betty; his siblings George and Cleo; his parents James and Thetis; his father-in-law Clyde; his mother-in-law Evelyn; and his brother-in-law Harlen.
Our family was blessed beyond measure to call our father not only Dad, but also our hero and role model. Nick lived a life of determined commitment to his faith, family, friends, and community. Often working quietly behind the scenes, he made a lasting difference in countless lives. He served the Lord, his country, his family, his friends, his community, and strangers with humility and love.
Nick was a devoted husband, a steadfast father, and a caring grandfather who was always present in both joyful and difficult times. Throughout his life, he offered the same love, guidance, and a helping hand when needed to extended family, friends, and those he had just met. Family was seen in the widest manner possible, and he loved all who came into his life. In his final years, our family was especially grateful for the additional love and companionship he found with the friends and staff at Primrose, whom he deeply cherished. We know he is raising a joyful "toast" to them now. He was also blessed with the companionship of his faithful dog and friend, Zoe.
Nick built a legacy in Midland through Pizza Sam's, a business that has been a community staple for more than 65 years and remains proudly owned and operated by his family. The restaurant was often a means through which he quietly served and supported the community. His long-standing support of local teams and events ultimately led to his induction into the Michigan Softball Hall of Fame.
Those who knew Nick will forever remember his welcoming smile and warm spirit. We take comfort knowing he is now entering the Heavenly Kingdom, greeted by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He is reunited with Mom, embraced by loved ones, and surrounded by eternal peace.

Funeral services will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, December 20, 2025 from St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 4970 Mackinaw Road, Saginaw, MI. Nick's family will receive friends at Ware Smtih Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street, Midland, MI, on Friday from 3 – 7 p.m. with military honors being presented at 4 p.m. under the auspices of the Midland Honor Guard. The family will receive friends again at the church on Saturday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Donate Life America or The Bridge Food Center.
