Sally Berry Obituary
Sally Berry
Sally Barr Wilson Berry, of Newark, Ohio, formerly of Midland, Michigan and North Port, Florida, died Saturday, September 21, at her Hearth Brook residence of Newark, Ohio.
The daughter of the late James Barr Wilson and Frances Kiddie Wilson was born on January 15, 1938 in Painesville, Ohio. Sally also was predeceased by a brother, James Wilson, and a sister, Sue Jaskewicz. Sally was a 1956 graduate of Detroit Southeastern High School and attended Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in elementary education and a Master's Degree in library science from Central Michigan University.
Sally married Roy Christian Berry on July 4, 1959, and she is survived by their three children, Chris (Donna) Berry of North Port, Florida, Anne (Kevin) Dunlap of Johnstown, Ohio, and Cathe Berry of Newark, Ohio; six grandchildren Ryan (Courtney) Carloni, Katie (Drew) Adair, Emilie (Tess Fry) Dunlap, Alexis Workman, Makenna Dunlap, and Lee Workman; four great grandchildren Winnie Adair, Archie Workman, Theo Carloni, and Sadie Fry-Dunlap. Sally is also survived by a nephew John (Kris) Berry, nieces Jennifer (James) Beckenhaupt and Katie (Draughon) Silcox, as well as many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Both Sally and Roy moved to Midland, Michigan in 1962 and became active members of Trinity Lutheran Church and worked as teachers in the Midland Public Schools. Sally helped open up Woodcrest Elementary in 1970 and happily made a productive career there inspiring 5th grade students and working with fellow teachers who became lifelong friends, even after retirement in 1995. With the help of Texas Instruments, Sally was one of the first teachers to provide a classroom set of calculators. Sally also organized and was the announcer for the yearly elementary school track meet at the Midland High Stadium.
Sally is remembered by her sunny smile, her encouraging manner, and her positive outlook. She enjoyed visiting with friends and family, but especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In a way, all children were her children as she located and inspired everyone's super power. Given time, she could find commonality and good will with anyone she met, whether talking about places to travel or her favorite coach Tom Izzo. Although traveling to all 50 states (her last, Oregon, completed in 2007), Canada, and Europe, her favorite destination was Northern Michigan where she spent time every summer at Harbor Lights in Frankfort. She has a bench in Frankfort looking over Lake Michigan with the following inscription: "The Sun may Set, but Grandma Sally's Love Always Shines for her Grandchildren!" Memorial Contributions may be shared with Midland Trinity Lutheran Church (3701 Jefferson Ave.) or Absolute Hospice-Canton (330-498-8075). A Celebration of Life Gathering will be scheduled at a later date.
