Shirley Plumer Obituary

Shirley G. Plumer
Shirley (Geeseman) Plumer passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 15th, 2021. Shirley graduated from Midland High School in 1960 and worked for the Dow Chemical Company before having her 2 children, David and Jill. Moving to Sanford in 1971, as her children attended Meridian Public Schools, she volunteered at the schools in many different capacities. She also spent countless hours running her children to practices and never missed one of their band concerts or sporting events. After the kids were nearly raised, she returned to school and earned a bachelor's degree in social work from Central Michigan University. She then went on to have a fulfilling career working with the developmentally disabled in Midland County.
The long-term illness and subsequent passing of her son, David was a devastating loss. His children and grandchildren helped to fill that void and brought her endless joy and happiness in the years since his passing. Social media allowed her to stay connected and watch the "grands and great-grands" grow and thrive. Mom enjoyed traveling and experiencing different cultures and adventures. When she was no longer able to travel, she read books to bring the world to her.
Shirley is survived by her daughter-in-law Betty (Scott); grandson Matt and his children David, Kylie and her mom Amanda; granddaughter Kellie (Braden) and great grand-daughter Mila. She is also survived by her daughter Jill (Cathy); grandsons Andrew and Bill (Stephanie) and great grandchildren Ali and Will. In addition, she is survived by siblings Larry (Onalee) Geeseman, Robert (Linda) Geeseman, Glenda Skym, Debbie Bis, Laurie (Keith) Hood, Glenn (Violet) Dixon and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her son David, she is predeceased by her parents and sister Becky Whittington.
A celebration of life will take place on Wednesday, July 21st from 4-8 PM at the Sanford American Legion. At 7PM, there will be a short program where everyone will be invited to share their favorite memories, great advise or inspiring messages that were imparted by the wise and loving Shirley Plumer.
Mom had a strong connection with Sanford so the devastation from the dam breaches was heartbreaking to her. However, she was so proud of the way that the community has come together to rebuild. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to "Sanford Strong."
