Susan B. Shaw, 64, of Midland, beloved wife, mother, Mimi, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, passed away at home surrounded by family on October 23, 2021 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. She was born to Roger and Martha (Fisher) Briggs on August 15, 1957. She married her life partner David Shaw on August 31, 2014.
Susan graduated from Michigan Tech in 1979 with a degree in chemical engineering. Following graduation, she worked for Dow Chemical for 35 years until retiring in 2014. Susan was a hardworking, compassionate and loving person who enjoyed life. She cherished being active at all ages and was a talented athlete. She was never afraid to try something new from wake surfing to adult soccer to becoming a Zumba instructor. Susan gained a love of sports from her parents and never missed a chance to support their beloved Ohio State Buckeyes.
She was most passionate about her big family and loved spending time with all of them. As a devoted mother and grandmother, she loved spoiling her children and grandchildren. Susan always supported her children in all ways, especially at their many sporting events. She and her husband Dave enjoyed hosting their children and grandchildren at their homes in Michigan and Maine. She and Dave made a great team pursuing their interests in home renovations and gardening. Sue was the creative force while Dave helped bring her ideas to fruition. They loved to cook and travel, recently sailing with friends on their 47' sailboat through the Panama Canal and on to the Galapagos Islands. Above all, she loved to laugh and have fun with those she loved. Sue's compassion for life, her love for others and her exuberance were well known to all who knew her.
Susan is survived by her loving husband David, children Derek Sinclair of Cleveland, OH, Melissa (Troy) Grunder of Midland, MI, Jordan (David) Serrano of Bartlett, IL, Danielle Shaw of Madison, WI, and Stephen (Katie) Shaw of San Francisco, CA, grandchildren Emmeline, Paxton, Coralie Grunder and Penelope and Lucille Serrano. She is also survived by her parents Roger and Martha Briggs, brother Mike (Vicki) Briggs, sister-in-law Mart Briggs as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Roger Briggs.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Anita Hahn officiating. Friends may visit with the family at Smith-Miner Funeral Home on Friday, November 5, 2021 from 4:00-7:00 PM and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
