Thomas Monto Obituary

Thomas Monto
Thomas Harold Monto, passed away at the age of 83 on September 21, 2025, at MyMichigan Medical Center in Midland surrounded by loved ones. Born on February 25, 1942, in Bay City, Michigan, Tom was the cherished son of the late Harold and Helen (Reiter) Monto.
A proud graduate of Bay City Central High School in 1960, Tom's thirst for knowledge led him to Western Michigan University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree. On August 15, 1964, he married the former Judy Spinner in Bay City, together they raised one daughter. Tom had a distinguished career in the insurance industry, where his integrity and work ethic were evident to all. After more than 35 years of dedicated service, he embraced retirement.
A man of Christian faith, Tom lived his life as a testament to his beliefs. His love for the outdoors was boundless, as he found joy and solace in fishing, hunting, sailing, and shooting. He was a proud Michigander who celebrated the state's natural beauty and enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams, the Red Wings and Tigers.
Tom's passion for travel took him on many adventures, notably trail riding out West and creating memories on vacations with his family. An accomplished marksman, Tom not only received numerous gold medals at the Canadian Airgun Grand Prix but also shared his love for the sport through coaching the junior shooters. His commitment extended to several conservation efforts, where he was an active member of organizations such as Ducks Unlimited, and Trout Unlimited.
Tom leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Judy, his daughter and son-in-law Michelle and John Metry, his grandson Matthew Metry, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who were like an extended family to him. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Eugene Jukkara.
A Celebration of Life gathering will take place from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2025, in the Williams Hall at St. John's Episcopal Church 405 N. Saginaw Street in Midland with light refreshments. A short commendation of Tom's life will happen at 1:15 p.m. inside the hall. An immediate family only service will be held at a later date.
Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the St. John's Episcopal Church or Muscular Dystrophy Association.
