MASSAC COUNTY, Ill. - Elgie L. Rottmann, 91, of Massac County, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2025, at Southgate Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Metropolis.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at St. John Lutheran Church with Jeff Trovillion officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Elgie was born to Allen and Magda Rottmann on Sept. 18, 1934, in Volga, South Dakota. The family moved back to Massac County when Elgie was 1 year old and became a permanent resident of the community. After graduating from high school, Elgie served in the U.S. Army during peacetime. He married Ann Trovillion in 1963, and to that union three children were born. He was a lifetime member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served and participated in many capacities, including Sunday School teacher, Men's Club and church council. He worked at and retired from LaFarge after over 30 years as a scale house operator.
Elgie enjoyed many activities, such as bowling, pheasant hunting, baseball, and football, and was an avid pinochle player. His true passions, though, were his family and farming.
Elgie is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ann; three children, Steve Rottmann and wife, Amanda, Janet (Rottmann) LaVeau and husband, John, and Russ Rottmann and wife, Lori; 15 grandchildren, Landon, Lyla, Lowen, Lawson, Locke, Lorelai, Langston, Laredo, Leeland, and LornaRae Rottmann, Macy LaVeau and Hayden LaVeau, Emily Windhorst (Jordan), Ethan Rottmann (Rachelle Cox), and Ellie Rottmann (Eli Jacobs); one great grandchild, Blaire Ellori Windhorst; sisters-in-law, Becky Brust, Chris Shepler (Hank) and Ella Trovillion; brother-in-law, Bud Trovillion; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters-in law, Richard and Shirley Rottmann and Donald and Kay Rottmann; sister and brother-in-law, Alfredia and Paul Horman; brothers-in-law, Gordon Trovillion, Eddie Trovillion, Mike and Linda Trovillion, Walt Trovillion, and sisters-in-law, Donna Diron Trovillion and Martha Borys.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
Pallbearers will be Greg Horman, Mike Horman, Bruce Horman, Darian Rottmann, Zach Horman and Callan Horman. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be given to St. John Lutheran Church, 5187 Old Marion Road, Metropolis, IL 62960.
Arrangements are entrusted to Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home.
