Margaret Wehrmeyer Obituary

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Margaret "Jeanine" Metzger Wehrmeyer, 91, formerly of Metropolis, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Nov. 21, 2025, at the Thrive at Brow Wood Assisted Living Facility in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.

Jeanine was born on Nov. 10, 1934, in Paducah, Kentucky, where she spent much of her formative years. Her family moved to Metropolis in 1949. In 1951, she embarked on a spiritual journey by joining the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph Convent in Maple Mount, Kentucky. After two years, she returned to Metropolis and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1954.

On May 19, 1956, Jeanine married Allan Wehrmeyer. Their union spanned an incredible 66 years, during which they raised five children. The couple began their married life in Washington, D.C., where they both worked for the F.B.I. while Allan pursued his college education.

Jeanine was a devoted member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Metropolis. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she shared her love of prayer and devotion with her family and community. Jeanine served as a choir member and cantor for many years.

An avid athlete, Jeanine's passion for running led her to complete six marathons, the River-to-River Relay, and take part in countless 10K races. Later in life, she became a lifeguard and taught swim lessons and water aerobics at Broadway United Methodist Church in Paducah. Among her many accomplishments, she swam across the Ohio River, showcasing her strength and determination. Dancing also brought Jeanine immense joy throughout her life, whether it was square-, ballroom-, or line-dancing.

Jeanine is survived by her four loving children, Joe Wehrmeyer (Cheryl Lankhaar), Jeanie Herring, Rich Wehrmeyer, and Ann Haderlein (Josh Ackerman); five grandchildren, Matthew Wehrmeyer (Briana Smith), Richard Herring (Cheriah Herring), Kathryn Wehrmeyer (Steven Starr), Eric Haderlein, and Nicole Haderlein; and six great-grandchildren, Lillian Wehrmeyer, Dylan Wehrmeyer (Rylee Wehrmeyer), Kyron Wehrmeyer, Eleanor Herring, Lucy Herring, and Lillian Herring. She is also survived by her brothers, Fritz Metzger, John Metzger, and Bill Metzger; and her sisters-in-law, Joan Holzer, and Susan Holland.

She is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Allan Wehrmeyer; her daughter, Suzie Wehrmeyer; her parents Harry and Germaine Metzger; and her siblings, Pete Metzger, Joe Harry Metzger, Tillie Talmage, Catherine Rush, and Germaine Wilkins.

Visitation will take place on from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Aikins-Farmer-Loftus-McManus Funeral Home in Metropolis. A funeral Mass will follow on 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with concelebrants Michael Christopher Mujule and Rich Wehrmeyer. Jeanine will be laid to rest at Metropolis Memorial Gardens.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Thrive at Brow Wood and Tapestry Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to Jeanine.
