ROCKVILLE, Md. - Olaf Mikal Haugen Jr. of Rockville, Maryland, passed away on Oct. 2, 2025, at the age of 89.
Born and raised in Paducah, Kentucky, he was the son of Olaf Mikal Haugen Sr. and Emma Nell Katterjohn Haugen. Beloved husband of Susan Kirkpatrick Haugen of 64 years, loving father to Melissa S. Haugen of Frederick, Maryland, and Mark M. Haugen (Margo Schulze-Haugen) of Dunn Loring, Virginia, and "Boppa" to Molly E. Haugen and Ryan M. Haugen. Olaf's life was marked by an enduring love for his family and friends, a passion for athletics, and a successful career that spanned decades.
A proud alumnus of the University of Kentucky, Olaf earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1959. He worked for Westinghouse and Eaton for 47 years as a sales engineer and district sales manager. His friendly demeanor and honesty were valued by both colleagues and customers.
Throughout his life, Olaf remained a passionate athlete. He graduated from Tilghman High School, where he participated in football and track, going to the state championship in high jump. Olaf lettered in tennis and diving at the University of Kentucky and represented his fraternity, the SAEs, in intramural wrestling. In his later years, Olaf learned to ski and continued to play tennis and golf weekly. These activities brought him joy and lasting friendships.
Olaf's story does not end with his passing, but lives on in the stories and memories shared by those who were fortunate enough to have known him. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
The family received friends, 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at Robert A. Pumphrey Funeral Home, 300 W. Montgomery Ave, Rockville, MD 20850; followed by a memorial service. Inurnment will be private in Pennsylvania.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Montgomery Hospice, montgomeryhospice.org.

Olaf was a dear friend and tennis partner for many years at Bethesda Country Club. We shared many good times on and off the tennis court. Olaf was also a wonderful person who was generous with his time to all. He will be missed. Charlie Salcetti
