Samuel Burgess Obituary

Samuel N. Burgess III, 85, of Paducah, passed away peacefully on Aug. 17, 2025, at home in Nashville, Tennessee.

Samuel was born on Jan. 8, 1940, in Oak Hill, West Virginia. His parents eventually moved the family to Paducah, where he graduated from Paducah Tilghman High School and attended Murray State University. After 40 years as a chemical operator, he retired from B.F. Goodrich Company.

Samuel served in the U.S. Army during the Berlin Crisis with an honorable discharge. He was awarded the honor of Kentucky Colonel, the highest title bestowed by the commonwealth of Kentucky in recognition of his noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding service to our nation.

Upon retiring, Sam enjoyed trout fishing in Arkansas and Montana, as well as golfing. His talent for crafting the most beautiful and detailed trout flies, as well as his skill to fabricate custom golf clubs for others, was admired by all who knew him.

Sam's warm and hospitable personality endeared him to many friends through his various activities. His absence will be felt deeply.

Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Burgess, and his parents, Samuel N. Burgess Jr. and Evelyn Lucille Dixon-Burgess.

He is survived by his three children, Shannon Garrett (Rodney) of Nashville; Samuel Burgess IV of Calvert City, Kentucky; Valerie Taylor of Paducah; and a grandson, Matthew Taylor; and his brother Richard Burgess (Ellen) of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The Burgess family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for Sam's wonderful caregiver angels, twin sisters Mary Barcomb and Susan Reed, for their devotion and loving compassionate care over the last year; for the caring angels of Heart'N Soul Hospice, Mary Queen of Angels' caregiver Stephanie and nurses Valerie and Carmen, and for Tanea for her loving care in the home. And finally, we extend our gratitude to the Sunny Day Club for their caring volunteers and enriching programs, which Sam enjoyed very much.
