David Mercer Obituary

Our family mourns the passing of David Franklin Mercer, a loving husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, mentor and friend. Born in Greenville, Michigan in 1947, to Dale and Jacqueline Mercer, he moved to Watsonville in 1955 when he was in 7th grade. Dave was well known in and around Santa Cruz County, as sports were a big part of Dave's life. He was a standout student-athlete at Watsonville High School, earning top awards in Football, Basketball and Baseball. In 2000, he was inducted into the Watsonville High School Hall of Fame, where his basketball jersey still hangs in the WHS gymnasium. He spent his college years at San Jose State University, where he played football and met his lifelong sweetheart Christine. Dave and Chris were married for 56 years and resided in Ben Lomond for all of those precious years together, raising their three sons, Brian, Mark and Jeff. In 1970, Dave earned his teaching credential and began his teaching and coaching career at San Lorenzo Valley High School. For 39 years, Dave taught Social Science and Independent Studies, and coached Football, Boys and Girls Basketball, and Golf for SLV. He had such a positive impact on so many of his students and athletes in the Valley. As a Football coach and offensive coordinator, Coach Merc boasts over 200 wins in 35 seasons, and was an integral part of the Cougars winning 46 straight league games, 9 league titles and 3 CCS Championships in the 1990s & early 2000s. In addition to his career as a teacher/coach, Dave also went to law school in the 1980s and earned his JD in 1981 passing the bar exam on his first attempt. Although life as an attorney was short-lived, Dave was one of the smartest men we've ever known. So smart, in fact, that he chose to spend more time with his wife and children rather than being a full time lawyer. One of Dave's proudest athletic accomplishments happened at SLV High School in 1973, where he and other members of the SLV Faculty beat the Oakland Raiders in a charity basketball game 93-90, where Merc scored 60 points to lead the staff in one of the all time upsets in Valley lore. Although there are too many stories to share, the one he would most want to share with you is that his proudest accomplishment was raising his three boys.
Dave Mercer passed away on Monday, December 15, 2025 at 1:37am surrounded by his wife Chris, and his three boys at their home in Ben Lomond.
One of the kindest men we've ever known, Dave was loved by everyone who knew him and will be deeply missed. Dave is survived by his wife, Chris; two sisters, who live in Michigan; his three sons; and seven grandchildren with whom he adored.
The Mercer Family will be holding a memorial service for Dave on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 10:00am at the SLVHS Gymnasium.

Please accept my condolences to the Mercer family
I officiated football for 20 years and there were no games better than Dave´s. What a great coach and truly a gentleman!!!! I often wished that all coaches could be like Dave. RIP Coach!!!!

My good friend for 4 years at Watsonville High School. I remember Dave always wearing a smile and greeting people in the halls as he walked to class. I went to everyone of our football and basketball games and was always impressed by his athletic ability. He was a great guy, adored by all who knew him. My heart is broken at his passing. My sincere condolences to his lovely wife, Chris and his sons and grandchildren. They were his world.

Chris, Brian, Mark, Jeff and all of the Mercer grandchildren.
Coach Mercer was such an important person in my life.
I was fortunate to be able to tell him that couple of years ago.
I was manager of his first basketball team at SLV and was on his teams the next two years.
He became my favorite teacher and friend, he gave me advice in saying the right thing to my future wife, Sharon Wright, we've been married since 1976.
So he gave me excellent words of wisdom.
I was the score keeper and stat man in the famed Raiders game. I told him last year that I found the shot chart a few years earlier and informed him he actually would have scored 69 points. He shot 6 of 9 from what would have been the three point shot which in the 70's there was no arc shot.
Coach will always be in my thoughts as a friend and mentor.

Oh My Goodness!! I find this extremely painful! I had the pleasure of being part of his Watsonville High School athletic accomplishments. We were part of the basketball and baseball teams from 1960-1963. David was very athletic and I enjoyed watching him play be it football, basketball or baseball. David was always a gentleman and a very respectful. I will miss him.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to his wonderful family, relatives and friends. I have water in my eye.

I attended SLV for a short time in 1971, Dave was always so nice to me a new kid in town, he would take a group of us to the Warriors games at his own costs and was always interested in our lives and instilled good sportsmanship in all of his students, Rest in peace Dave and Thanks for some great times in High school

Rest peacefully Merc. Along with all of the accolades as an athlete and a coach, you taught a pretty great AP History class. The Bailey kids will never forget you.

Coach Mercer, was the best , I had him a teacher in high school, cheered for SLV when he was coaching and grew up and went to school with his boys. My heart goes out to the family. Coach will be missed.
