John Olan Nettles, 93, of Palatka, passed from this life on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at his home unexpectedly from natural causes.
Born and raised in Georgetown, Olan attended Crescent City High School and left school early to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After 4 years in the U.S. Navy, Olan began working as a Master Mechanic with Florida Power and Light Corp in St. Augustine, West Palm Beach and later transferred to the Palatka Plant. Following 20-plus years with FPL, he transitioned to Seminole Electric, where he also worked for about 15 years. He became a licensed real estate agent and worked with Broncile Parcher Realty and with Beckham Realty.
Years ago, he had served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Crescent City and later was a founding member of Liberty Baptist Church in Palatka. Olan had also been a member of Masonic Lodge # 80 in Kissimmee. In his leisure, John enjoyed fishing, golfing, working in his yard and tinkering and fixing things (appliances, mowers, anything with a motor).
He was preceded in death by his wife of over 20 years, Virginia Sue Nettles; his parents, James and Quida Nettles; a son, Roger Alan Nettles; a brother, William Nettles; a sister, Latrelle Hall Smith; and a granddaughter, Kristal Sanders.
John is survived by a daughter, Teri McClellan of Palatka; 3 brothers, George Morris Nettles of Palatka, Marvel Nettles of Hollister and Troy Addison Nettles Sr. (Vicki) of Crescent City; 2 sisters, Althea Shepley of West Palm Beach and Jeanette Wagner of Alabama; a grandson, Jese McClellan (Chelsey); 5 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members.
Memorial services celebrating Olan's life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Dr. Don Aycock officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of services at 2 p.m.
