Sam A Stephens peacefully passed away on June 3, 2021 at the age of 85 after an extended illness. He is survived by his beloved wife Valerie Stephens. Born in 1936, Sam was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stephens both of whom are deceased.
Sam attended Palm Beach High School from 1954 through 1958. University of Florida in 1958 through 1961 majoring in economics and political science. In 1961 Sam joined his father's insurance agency and in 1965 became president of the agency.
In 1982 Sam founded AMCOMP as the Florida Air Conditioning Contractors Association Self Insurers Fund (FACCA SIF). In 1995 FACCA SIF converted to Pinnacle Assurance Corp. And in 1996 Pinnacle Assurance Corp. was renamed AMCOMP Preferred Insurance Company. In 1997, the company acquired another insurer with 21 states, and renamed the organization AMCOMP assurance with $457 million in assets. In 1996 AMCOMP was capitalized into a stock company by Welsh Carson and Sprout Venture Capital expanded through out eastern states.
In 2006 AMCOMP entered into a IPO and began public trading and then was sold.
After the sale of AMCOMP Sam established a large charitable remainder trust upon his demise, half of the trust will be distributed to the university of Florida and the other half to the Scripps Research Institution In Jupiter, FL.
When Sam retired he traveled and spent the summers in Linville Ridge Country Club In Linville, NC. Winters were spent in West Palm Beach.
Sam enjoyed traveling and playing golf and meeting new people. His great love was boating and fishing in the Bahamas which he had done since he was a young boy.
It is no surprise that Sam's last wish was to be cremated and have his ashes be scattered in the outgoing tide at the Jupiter Inlet where he had spent many happy days fishing. May he travel through eternity in peace with God.
