Theresa "Terry" Carnes
Theresa "Terry" Carnes
Theresa "Terry" Ferguson Carnes, beloved mother and dedicated teacher, passed away in West Palm Beach, Florida on Sunday, January 31, 2021 at the age of 72. A native of Palm Beach, FL, the daughter of Cecil and Iler C. Ferguson, Terry graduated from Palm Beach High School and then attended Converse College. She received her degree in Elementary Education from the University of Colorado, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Living in West Palm Beach, FL and Highlands, NC, Terry was a member of numerous groups and organizations including the Junior League of the Palm Beaches, Cupcakes, Opportunity, Inc., P.E.O., the Sailfish Club of Florida and Wildcat Cliffs Country Club in North Carolina. She was also a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in West Palm Beach and the Church of the Good Shepherd in Cashiers, NC.
Elementary education was Terry's passion. She devoted her career to teaching generations of first grade students at Palm Beach Day Academy until retiring in 2013. As a teacher, "Mrs. Carnes" touched the lives of so many: inspiring fellow teachers, engaging with parents, and instilling in her students a love for reading and learning.
As an adoring mother with a lifetime of close friendships, Terry Carnes was so loved. She was an extraordinary woman whose smile could light up any room, and she brought stories to life with her encyclopedic knowledge of family history. Her stories about growing up in Palm Beach were full of laughter. She spent her younger days – when shoes were optional and air conditioning was the cool ocean breeze – riding bikes on the Lake Trail, fishing off the docks, waterskiing in the Intracoastal after school, and swimming at the beach almost every day. Friends and family have precious memories of time spent with Terry golfing, boating, attending Family Night at the Club, dressing up as a family for Halloween, playing croquet, chatting through water aerobics, going for dinner, and just sitting on the porch for a visit. As succinctly put by a close friend, "if the measure of a person's life is how other lives were made better by knowing her, then Terry's life was beyond measure: a rich one indeed."
Terry was preceded in death by her brother, Eric Ferguson. She is survived by her son, Eric Carnes (Michelle) of Naples and daughter, Kathryn Carnes of Lake Worth Beach; former husband, Bruce Carnes of Alma, Nebraska; brother, Thomas Ferguson (Sue Fan) of West Palm Beach and their children, Matthew Ferguson (Chrissie), Tad Ferguson (Mae), and Branch Ferguson (Katy) and grand nieces and nephews; and a much loved extended family of cousins.
Out of concern for the health of others, the family will hold a small, private service at Holy Trinity Church. If you wish to honor Terry, in lieu of sending flowers, please donate to Opportunity, Inc. which is formally known as Opportunity Early Childhood Education & Family Center located at 4171 Westgate Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33409.

TERRY WAS MY SON'S 1ST GRADE TEACHER. WE BOTH LOVED HER FROM DAY ONE. SHE HAS NO PEERS. HER IDEA OF A PARENT COMING ONCE A WEEK TO READ A BOOK AND BRING A TREAT FOR THE CLASS WAS BRILLIANT. MY SON AND I THANK HER FOR INSTILLING A LOVE LEARNING THAT REMAINS. OUR HEARTS GO OUT TO THE FAMILY AND WE WILL KEEP THEM IN OUR PRAYERS.

I just heard about this very sad loss. Too young! Terry was a member of the Nightingale Trail gang that also included Worley Sewell and nearby friends Tim Crowley and David Deger. Terry was a good friend, sweet, fun-loving, and sincere. I know she was dedicated to teaching and enriched the lives of many young people I'm sure. Condolences to her family. Rest in peace, sweet Terry.

Terry’s son, Eric, is married to my daughter, Michelle.
So it has been my privilege to know Terry, closely, for several years.
In my lifetime I have never met a more genuine, refined, generous and delightful woman than Terry Carnes .
We miss her; we always will love her.

So many fond memories of spending most Thursdays together with our small children at "play group" . Terry always had a warm smile, a twinlke in her eye and a gracious, kind spirit. I also had the pleasure of a visit every year in Highlands when we would share updates on our families and events of the past year. Terri's strength, charm and quick smile were always at the forefront. She will be missed by so many. Condolences to Kathry, Eric and all her family. Lindsey (Crawford) Sones

I had the wonderful opportunity to serve Mrs. Carnes for thirty-one
years at the Sailfish Club of Florida. She was never without a smile
when she received her ginger ale from me. Heaven will be much
richer now that she is with our Savior Jesus Christ.
With blessings and sadness.

We have spent some time with Terry over the past years. My cousin Susie Cole Wean and her husband Johnny were long time friends and spent many happy years between Cashiers, NC and Palm Beach enjoying each other's company. Terry was a gentle, lovely woman and steady with her goodwill and warmth. We were the lucky recipients of those qualities. She will be missed dearly by many who shared our luck in knowing her. May her memory be a blessing. Our condolences to her children and extended family and friends. Peg and Dennis Kennelly.
