Alvin Doherty Obituary
Alvin (Al) Doherty was born April 15, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan to Arthur and Irene Doherty. Died May 16, 2021 due to a slip and fall at his home in Boynton Beach, Florida.
Al was a wonderful and successful man, loved and respected by almost all that met him. He will be missed fiercely by his family and friends.
He attended The Henry Ford Trade School, Ford Engineering School and Wayne University. He was first employed as a Tool and Die Maker, then Methods Engineer with Ford Motor Co. in 1952. Al became a Field Engineer for Detroit Ball Bearing Co. until promoted to Branch Manager in 1955 where he served until moving to Florida in 1969. Al was voted The Young Man of the Year for Redford Township, MI in 1959 and President of the Redford Chamber of Commerce in 1961. He became a real estate broker in Delray Beach with Gringle and Doherty in 1972, later becoming Gringle, Doherty & Wheat, Inc. Al was named Realtor of the Year in 1978, 1988 and 1994 for his contributions to the local and state Realtor Associations. He was awarded the professional designations of Graduate, Realtor Institute, Certified Residential Specialist and Certified Residential Brokerage Manager. He was a past president of the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce in 1974, Delray Beach Lions Club from 1972-73, Delray Beach, Noon Lions Club from 1981-82, The Unity Church of Delray in1984, The Delray Beach Association of Realtors in 1984, and the Palm Beach County Realtor-Attorney Joint Committee from1986-87. Al was commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1948-62. He was licensed as a commercial pilot in 1965. He served as a volunteer at Bethesda Memorial Hospital amassing 24,000 hours over 18 years.
Al is survived by four children, all of which still live in the immediate area; Maureen Bair (Ronald), Michael, Robert (Patti Jones) and Ellen Boulette (Alfred), grandchildren Nicole Boulette-Laptad (Matt Laptad) of Virginia and Alex Bair of Los Angeles. Al's love of 67 years Elaine, passed away in 2015.
The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929.
