Bernice WEINSTEIN Obituary

WEINSTEIN, Bernice Lydia
Bernice Lydia Weinstein died in her home in Palm Beach, FL, on March 30, 2015. Known affectionately as "Bunny" (and by her grandchildren as "Superbunny"), Bernice is survived by her children, Nancy Brown and Neil Weinstein; their spouses, Peter Brown and Carol Weinstein; her grandchildren, Rachel Weinstein, Melissa Brown Eisenberg, and Laura Weinstein; and seven great-grandchildren: Elliot, Hannah, Lucy, Judah, Cora, Teddy, and Iris. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Weinstein, and by a grandson, Eric Brown. Bernice was born on September 26, 1920, in Lexington, VA, to Herman and Anna Lenowitz. She attended SUNY Albany until she met her future husband, Arthur. They married in January of her senior year and moved to Chicago, where Neil and Nancy were born. Bernice finished her bachelor's degree at Roosevelt University and taught English in several Chicago high schools. In 1969, Bernice and Arthur moved to Skokie, IL, and in 1979, they bought a house in Scottsdale, AZ, where they escaped the harsh Midwest winters for 18 years. Bernice especially enjoyed being a docent at the Scottsdale Art Museum, and she was extremely proud of her designation as a "life docent." Traveling was a highlight of Bernice and Arthur's life together, and they made many trips across the world, visiting six continents. After Arthur's death in 1997, Bernice moved to Palm Beach. She continued her lifelong passions for art, travel, ballet, and literature, facilitating a book group in her condominium building until the end of her life. She was a role model and inspiration for her family in innumerable ways. She read newly published, well-regarded books before others had even heard of them; she exercised regularly and with vigor; she read the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal on a daily basis; and she did volunteer work for the Israel Cancer Association. A graveside ceremony will be held in Chicago on Thursday, April 2nd. Friends and family wishing to make donations in Bernice's memory can contribute to the Israel Cancer Association.
