Donta Manuel Obituary

Two Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies were killed on Nov. 28, 2007, in Pahokee as deputies attempted to stop a stolen car and were struck instead by another deputy in pursuit.

Among the dead is Jonathan Wallace, a 23-year-old whose childhood dream was to become an officer and had been on the job about a year, according to Pahokee Mayor J.P. Sasser. He was engaged to be married.

The other is Donta J. Manuel of Belle Glade. Manuel was a father in his 30s and was preparing to be Wallace's best man.

Friends and family had already begun to gather at the home of Wallace's mother home at 8:30 a.m., even as his former co-workers circled in helicopters overhead still searching.

The tragedy began to unfold at about 1:09 a.m. when deputies took a report of a stolen 1990 gold Camry in Belle Glade. Word went out and at a time with little traffic, the car was spotted headed north on Highway 715 toward Pahokee.

Three marked cars - a road patrol, a sergeant and a K9 unit - were given the OK to pursue on 715, a long stretch of two-lane road along cane fields with little opportunity to turn off.

Wallace and Manuel were deploying stop sticks in the road near the Pahokee Airport at about 1:30 a.m. when they were hit and killed.

The Camry ran over the sticks but kept going until the passengers were able to run out into a cane field a mile or two away.

After an extensive search, deputies took down the perimeter and were following other leads that indicated the people in the stolen car were able to get out of the fields and hitch a ride elsewhere.

The tragedy adds to the grief in the law-enforcement community in South Florida, where these two officers become the fourth and fifth to die in the line of duty in the past three months.

They are the first Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies to die in five years. Donald Lee Schavolt died of a heart attack while struggling with a suspect in 2002.

Its been 2 years, and I know its been said that with time wounds do heal. But I guess its not the time because I still hurt and pray that the day will come when I can pass a photo are even take a second look at the boys and not hurt from the resemblence that brings so much pain. Donta we love you and just know that I am doing what you always said you had confidence I would always do, that is taking the best care of our boys Donta Jr. and Diontray. If indeed you made it to Heaven please ask our father to grant me and the boys grace and mercy, and me strength to endure and keep the faith during the tough times. I love you and miss you my one and only husband and best friend forever. RIP

How many different roadways
he has trod.
Upward and ever up , since
time began.
His face turned up to the

For beauty lies in all

My deepest condolesces to the Manuel family. I had the pleasure to meet Donta seven years ago when I worked for the Pahokee Police Department. During my field training on night shift, we went on foot patrol and made sure the City of Pahokee and unincorporated area was safe. An imposing person on scene, he was the one you needed if things were going to go wrong. Every time he saw me he said "How you doing Perez?". I'll never forget that. I know he's with the Lord and making sure the officers are safe. God bless you Dante.

To the Manuel Family,

I had the esteem pleasure of working with Donta at Lifeskills Center Pahokee. His presence was always welcomed. His care for the children of the community was apparent and real. And they knew it he was for real. I remember the "talks" we would have with the young men in our school, Donta would always share his story of coming from Pahokee and making something of his life. What an inspiration!! He would work a detail in our development and every time he would stop by for a while...he was a joy and he will always be my younger brother. He and my wife would share their "Sanford and Son" favorite episode stories and we all would laugh from the beginning of his visit until he walked out the door.

Please know that the Payne family has shared in your grief and we will continue to lift you up before the presence of the Lord and pray for your strength, courage and healing...this too shall pass.

We love you and we love Donta.

Donta's Early Finish

I had a lot to do, more than some of you; But yet you wonder why I rest, I finished early.
Although I started on time and put in a full days work; I finished early.
Do some of you look at the years? I finished early.
With God it matters not at all; how great...how small...He looks for a ready heart like mine, and sometime you just have to finish early.

To Suzette and the children, Donta and Tray.

My friend and brother. From the time we were kids growing up in McClure Projects, you set a goal and a mission for yourself. You always said, "When I grow up, I'm going to be a Deputy Sheriff". You achieved that goal and set out to make a difference. I could not make it to see you off and celebrate your life, but I've followed the developments from afar. Know that your work was not in vain and your efforts were greatly respected. You fought the good fight. The last time we spoke, I told you how proud I would be to tell anyone in the room that I knew you personally when I would see you on an episode of COPS. If they needed further proof, I would pull out our yearbook, 1992. See you again someday. Peace be still.

My heartfelt condolences to both of the families of the "Fallen Officers."

I did not know Jonathan Wallace, nor did I know Donta Manual. I do know Donta's father, Jackie Manual, Sr. We used to work together at the South Bay Prison on Highway 27. I remember his youngest son going off to play basketball at UNC.

I have shed tears for your loss. In fact, when I left work on Tuesday, December 4, 2007, I was driving home to Wellington on the Twenty-Mile Bend from Belle Glade and I saw tons of flashing Blue and Red Overhead lights, and I thought to myself, was there a major accident?

As I got closer, driving east, I realized that the lights I was seeing were the "Blue Line" officers from the PBCSD, escorting two of their own to Pahokee. I had a moment to glance at the procession, and saw the two hearses, carrying Jonathan and Donta. Trust me, they were in very good hands! I have never witnessed such a procession of tribute and protection.

Burying a child, let alone, burying your son, who was tragically killed in the line of duty must be an unbearable pain.

Donta is gone and we will all miss him. What we all need to do is to remember that he passed doing what he wanted, strived, and did do.
Donta Wallace died doing his job, a job he wanted more than anything in the world and I a job I know his father and mother were proud of him for doing!

The rest of us need to refocus and strive to make a difference in this world for him, each and every day!

My thoughts are with those that knew and loved him!
