MERCER, Jr., George Riley
George Riley Mercer, Jr., 68, of Richmond, Virginia, and Palm Beach, Florida, died March 26, 2015, in Providence, Rhode Island. Mr. Mercer was the beloved son of Mary Rutherfoord Rose Mercer and George Riley Mercer, both deceased. He is survived by his daughters, Tinsley Randolph Mercer Mortimer and Dabney Winston Mercer. He is also survived by a sister Mary Rutherfoord Mercer Ferguson, four nephews, and numerous cousins. Mr. Mercer was a graduate of St. Christopher's School in Richmond, Virginia, and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Zeta Psi. After leaving the last semester of his senior year to join the Coast Guard Reserves, where he was an expert marksman, he completed his degree at the University of Georgia. Mr. Mercer was a principal in Mercer Rug and Carpet Company; the George-Marshall Corporation, a real estate investment firm; and GII Corporation. In later years, he became an architectural consultant, possessing a beautiful and acute eye for design and detail.
Mr. Mercer was a former board member of Planned Parenthood. He was a member of First Families of Virginia, Jamestowne Society, and a Baron of the Magna Charta Society. He was a former member of the Country Club of Virginia, the Commonwealth Club, the Richmond Hundred, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond, Virginia; the Deep Run Hunt Club in Goochland, Virginia; the Farmington Club in Charlottesville, Virginia; and the Everglades Club and Bath and Tennis Club in Palm Beach, Florida. Mr. Mercer will be remembered by his daughters and friends for his gentleness, generosity, loyalty, devotion, and laughter. George never failed to appreciate and remember with love and affection those who had been his friends and supported him during his lifetime. Burial at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, will take place at a later date.
