Hank Asher Obituary

Hank Asher, an entrepreneur who pioneered the use of databases and spent millions of his fortune fighting child pornography, died this week. He was 61.
Officials at TLO, Asher's Boca Raton company, said he ""died peacefully in his home"" Friday.
""He was a wonderful human being who, through his philanthropy, saved thousands of children,"" said former Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth, who worked for Asher for a time.
Asher's database work also led to the arrests of the Beltway snipers who killed 10 people in the Washington area in 2002.
Asher pioneered data mining software that was sold to businesses but also sped cops' ability to connect the dots in criminal investigations. Work that once required months could be done in a few minutes, Butterworth said.
When Asher arrived in South Florida in the 1970s, he gave little indication he'd become a data guru or a national crime-fighting figure. He was a high school dropout in search of a better climate for his commercial painting business than his Indiana home offered.
The painting company flourished, and Asher later founded Boca data firms Database Technologies and Seisint. After the Sept. 11 attacks, Seisint developed software that identified terrorists.
Asher owned 40 percent of Seisint in 2004, when it was sold to British publishing giant Reed Elsevier for $775 million and became part of LexisNexis.
""I really thought I'd wind up on a 200-foot yacht down in the South Pacific,"" Asher said in a 2009 interview with The Palm Beach Post. ""But I decided to go back to work.""
Asher's final project was TLFO, later changed to TLO, an acronym for ""The Last One."" Part of his business model was to build a supercomputer that could track child pornography as it traveled over the Internet, then give police free access.
Asher traced his passion for fighting child pornography to 1993, when he donated his database software to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The first time his creation helped rescue a child from a predator, Asher said, he felt like he was cashing ""a paycheck for the soul.""
After that, he immersed himself in the underworld of child predators. Asher said he wanted to catch ""the worst of the worst,"" men who rape infants, toddlers and young children.
""He really wanted to rid the world of pedophiles,"" Butterworth said.
Asher donated his computing power to law enforcement agencies. And he paid for police and prosecutors from around the world to travel to Boca to learn about his crime-fighting software.
Even after years of fighting pedophiles, Butterworth said, Asher would get tears in his eyes when a police officer from somewhere in the world called to let Asher know about a child molester who had been captured through Asher's software.
Asher also was driven by memories of his own checkered past. For about seven weeks in the early 1980s, Asher flew loads of cocaine from the Bahamas. He was never charged with a crime and later cooperated with drug warriors.
""He was very open about his past,"" Butterworth said. ""He never hid it. It bothered him.""
Portly and profane, Asher was a tangle of contradictions. He dropped out of high school, yet Butterworth swears his IQ was on par with Einstein and Edison.
After his brief foray into crime, Asher devoted two decades to helping cops catch killers and child molesters.
He was a high-powered businessman who never wore a tie or socks. A white guy who grew up on an Indiana farm, Asher liked to say he imagined God as a black woman.
""The guy was complex, to say the least,"" Butterworth said. ""Colorful is not the word for it. He was double, triple colorful.""
Never one to shy away from a fight, he seemed to relish legal battles with business rivals. And he loved to make bold pronouncements.
""I'm going for the gusto,"" Asher told the Post in 2009. ""I don't want to check out of this planet without building the world's most valuable company.""
He fell short of his vow to turn TLO into the world's most valuable company. Asher laid off most of the company's workers in May. However, those layoffs were temporary, and the company has bounced back, said Bridget O'Connor, TLO's executive director of human resources.
""Since May we have rebounded nicely and recalled most of those same employees by October,"" O'Connor said. ""We had a record revenue week last week and will more than likely have another record week this week.""
Butterworth said Asher should be remembered not for the ups and downs of his businesses but for his willingness to give of his wealth, not just to crime-fighting causes but also to cancer research and to earthquake relief in Haiti.
""He was the most generous person I've ever met in my life,"" Butterworth said.
Asher is survived by his wife, Judith, their two children, Desiree Asher and Carly Yoost, and his son-in-law, Wally Yoost.
John Walsh, host of the America's Most Wanted television series, likewise recalled Asher's generostiy.
""Hank was the most charitable man I ever met,"" Walsh said in a statement released by TLO. ""He was larger than life, but the biggest part of Hank was his heart.""
Staff researcher Niels Heimeriks contributed to this story.

Happy Birthday in Heaven, Hank.
There are people who leave quietly, and there are those who leave a mark that never fades, you were the latter. On your birthday, I find myself smiling through the ache, grateful for the time we shared and wishing for just one more conversation. You are missed in ways words can´t hold.
Always in my heart,

Hank saved my life twice in 2009. He saw a person struggling and in deep emotional pain. He saw my potential when most would close their door.

I wish you were here to see that I’m now qualifying as a therapist myself. Throughout my training I have met many hurdles and felt overwhelmed at times. I carry on as my way of paying It forward for your generosity of supporting me through treatment and rehabilitation.

Hank, I’m sorry I wasn’t well or strong enough to have been a better friend when you were here. Thank you for guiding me to a better place.

All these year later, I'm still thinking of you bro! Fold-up tables, instant coffee and dreams and schemes. From UL to IIC to DBT and beyond, we always had a blast figuring how to do the impossible. Still enjoy our chats in the dreaming. Looking forward to the next time.

Hank Asher and his sister sari I met in MN when sari was being treated for bone cancer. Hank gave her his bone marrow. He stayed at the hotel I concierged at. God told me that sari would not die but live to declare the works of the Lord. She lived. Hank said he would get on his knees and ask God what He wanted him to do and for God to give him the power to do it. Hank Asher was a great man!

I am a first cousin of Hank Asher. We were occasionally in touch, especially after the death of his sister, Sari, and then his mother, Lucille. I just learned of his death. I would so like to be in touch with his children. My name is Phyllis Loeff, M.D. My phone number is 847-432-5620. Can you pass this on to his family? Missing you so very much today on your birthday.

It is simply amazing how many lives you profoundly touched during your time on this earth. In a world where there is so much greed and self-dealing, your generosity and charitable good deeds continue to stand out as truly remarkable.

There is no doubt you were a gifted genius who made the world a safer place with the technology you developed but in the end so many agree that what made you extraordinary, and truly unforgettable, was your magnificent, over-sized heart.

I cannot imagine a life being lived more completely so as I remember you today, and every day until we meet again, I will smile and feel blessed to have been your friend…

Hippy Girl, I know you lost your brother. Hank I am honored to be “your kind of ---“, I'll see you soon…

Thinking about my friend hank. Who will never be forgotten.

September 9, 2013

missing you.

September 7, 2013

To a man I only met once, but whose wit, wisdom and actions have impacted me in ways that will stay with me forever: Thank you Hank for a random act of kindness no one would ever witness or know about. I will never forget the hope that dawned into my dark world that day you helped me without a second thought. Your gesture restored my faith in people, luck and even myself. It was enough to make me wonder if I shouldn't give up...right when I was ready to. How can this not be known as good karma?

I know you struggled with a lot. A big heart will do that to a person. But I believe your biggest thirst that could never be quenched was the joy you got from protecting people who were struggling and didn't have the power or voice to change their destiny. No one is ever perfect, but when people remember you they should know you were trying real hard to do whatever, wherever you could...and you did.

And that alone...is pretty amazing when you think about it. You were right, meeting you was unforgettable..and I wouldn't have it any other way. Love and peace to you Hank, an imperfect being who possessed the most perfect will to love unconditionally. I pray this grace will stay with you in your next season.

Hank, buddy, I miss you. Looking back it doesn't seem that long ago that I met you during the days of Asher Painting and Waterproofing. It was then, we began our friendship as your lawyer and friend. I fondly recall the PCs lined up on bread racks at the old Sample Road address. Lets not forget your venture into the distillery world and the variety pack of exotic island drinks. Weren't you the pirate with the eye patch on the box? Who can forget or maybe who can remember User Lovable, the dawn of a new world yet unrealized. I shared your enthusiasm through DBT, DBTO and its evolution to TLO.Thanks for all the fun, the dinners and good times on What It Is.I still hear your boisterous belly laugh and the twinkle in your eye. The lives of all you have touched are richer for having known you.

I am proud to have met such a great and kindhearted person. You will be greatly missed.Rest in peace my friend.

March 7, 2013

I first met Hank when I was installing electrical services for his company (DBT). I was working one day and he asked me to join his company and work for him. I didn't quite know what to think or do, so I told him I would take a leave of absentance from my current job and give DBT a chance. To my suprize I became the eleventh employee at DBT. During my years working with Hank we became great friends and well as employer and employee.
Thanks to Hank I was able to do and see so much of the world I otherwise would have never seen. The trips to the Bahamas were always filled with fun and adventure. Fishing on his boats with him and friends and family was a wonderful time to remember always.
I am proud to have been a part of Hanks world of fighting crime and missing children he founded by the Amber alert.
Hank gave me some many opportunities and experiences that I will always be grateful for. (Thanks Hank)
I met so many people thur Hank's work,
like John Walsh,Jessie Jackson,F. Lee Bailey, President of Venezuela, and so many others.
Hank was always helping during times of diasters, like hurricane Katrina.
John Walsh and I drove to New Orleans in a amphibious vehicle that Hank had designed hoping to capture news and conditions of the aftermath of Katrina.
Thank you Hank for supporting me and my family during the passing of my late wife Pam. And your generosity during this time. I will always be grateful for your help.
I could go on and on about my times with Hank, but just know (Hank) that my memories and stories of us are told to others all the time.
So farewell my friend,I will truley miss you!!

Hank Asher, a bit gruff at times, but always thinking of others, reaching out a hand to help, accepting people as they are, dreaming big dreams and solving problems in his sleep. By being him, he taught me so much and showed me how perfect I really am.

I consulted Hank on a computer "venture" and got pulled into his world. My excuses for why I was not "normal" were not accepted by Hank. Having grown up a foster child, I felt very broken, yet willing to take charge of my life. My 'life story' didn't phase Hank, instead it inspired him to show me all the really successful people with my 'exact story'. Hank accepted me wholly.

I think he wished I was a 9 or a 2 :0), but both of us were 8s. I love this man, this is a person who did great works and helped a lot of people. I'm sad I didn't get to tell him in this lifetime how special, perfect and amazing he is....one last time.

REMEMBER TO reach out to those you love, you never know when they will be gone. Thank you Hank. Thanks to his family too...by allowing Hank to be Hank (always thinking, workaholic, independent), you allowed him to change the world. I say thank you for the multitudes of people.

Hank, I miss you! Thank you for adding additional inspiration and clarity to my life.

I met Hank in '76 as an employee of Asher Painting, I was just a punk kid having fun in sunny Florida. He inspired and mentored me into his top forman and then supervisor (even fixed my broken teeth). Later brought me to Great Harbour "to get some work done" and a party or 2. A few years later he found that I was going to start a database company so he hired me at DBT to help teach me what that business was all about. Then he gave me a stake and sent me out to create Power In Data, Inc. He changed my life and I owe this great man everything as many many do. Thanks Hank. Please don't give God too much trouble about his database LOL. We will all miss you. Condolences to all his family and friends.

I first met Hank on a windy day while attempting to dock a Cruiser at North Andros Beach Hotel dock over thiry years ago. He alone saved the boat and my day. I did not know then that this guy in cutoff jeans, long black curly hair, a diamond earring, barefoot and shirtless would one day be the Capitan of his Industry. The Hank I knew then was the same you all have described to date, a strong caring man who always took the time to help those in need. I spent a total of two hours with Hank that day, more than enough to know the quality of the man. With a profound sense of loss, until we meet again.

I met Hank in 1979. I was only 23 and he was 28. For years after we met he was a very dear friend and he showed me how to love life! We lost touch for many years, but after the death of my husband a few years ago, we spoke several times. His sense of humor and the way that he lived his life hadn't changed. I've heard many people refer to him as “colorful”. I guess that's a great way to describe him! He was like a rainbow of many components, but he was unlike anyone else that I've met in my life. Hank was a very generous and caring man who will be missed by all of those who really knew him. I'll miss you Hank!

I met Hank Asher in 2010 at a World Investigator Conference in Dallas, TX. His life, work and dedication to humanity left a huge impact on me. My work desk is adorned with several inspirational writings... among those is Hank's business card. "AVEC SANG-FROID WITH HONOR AND TRUTH, WE PROTECT THE WEAK, THE WRONGED AND EACH OTHER, GENEROUSLY AND FIERCELY"

Hank's words have been one of my guiding lights in my work and my life. Hank will forever remain in my heart as one of the greatest inspirations. May Hank's family and friends rest assured that this Angel now has wings

January 13, 2013

Sometimes life squeezes out and marginalizes the best among us; and other times a special soul will come into our lives and help us find the confidence in our imagination and creativity -- and the result is that we change the world.

Therein lies the "Lightening in the Bottle" that was the essence of our friend Hank Asher: confounding, conflicted, colorful and complex beyond description because he was the type of person that was so defined by his actions and gestures of kindness.

Generous to others and yet some might observe, unwilling to care most of all for his own personal well-being. Lover of his family, friends or those who just happen to be a passing stranger, yet a maniacal madman if you were on the opposite side of Hank in the courtroom.

Hank was my friend at a distance from nearly the very beginning, when I was one of his first really significant investors at DBT, and then at Seisint, and as a Channel Partner Manager and Solution Provider at Accurint.

Today, while American is at war, Hank brought a little bit of peace into our lives and made this country a safer place against enemies both foreign and domestic. His vision was magical and so too were the people around him -- Hank was truly a conundrum within a conundrum.

As a military contractor, I know that most will never truly appreciate the genius of Hank's developments and inventions when they were married against our federated programs to help all people and safeguard this nation. There are many such stories -- most of the good ones will never be known or told.

But, for me Hank more than anything was someone that allowed me to take my early investment in his incredible genius and buy a home where I raised my family and then developed my own company and trademarks, patents, and products. He was the person on the other end of the phone when I would call him late at night from the hospital and weep as my wife suffered from Cancer, and he encouraged me to not be afraid, but gave me the strength and courage to find solutions and take action -- all of which helped saved her life, the love of my life. He would swear at me, I would scream at him, and when we would see one another again the reunion always began with a bear like handshake and hug, profane greetings -- and we would start all over again.

In my world, where I serve, friends come and go -- people get killed and we move on -- its always the Mission first. Our brave friends are not mourned in the daylight, but during our personal darkness when we are alone with our thoughts and prayers.

But, the loss of Hank is a special and profound wound, one that leaves me with great sadness and yet bewilderment over how life is so fleeting, so precious and for Hank -- so unfairly short.

We had the privilege of meeting Hank in 2009 as parents of Missing/Abducted Jennifer Kesse from Orlando,Fl 1/24/2006. Jennifer remains missing. We had never met a more sincere, compassionate, man who cared so deeply about the Missing. His anguish over the heinous crimes against our children was palpable. Hank, rest in piece...with your beloved Mom, sister now you are together. The world has lost a brilliant visionary. Your kindness will never be forgotten. Joyce & Drew Kesse

Dear dear Hank, may you finally be able to rest in peace and walk along side your beloved mother and sister as God welcomes you home. It is a very, very sad day without you in it Hank, and there are no words for the emptiness I feel inside . I will never forget the 1st time I walked into your office at DBT, and met the kindness, most interesting genius who will forever be in my heart and in my prayers. It was a privilege to know Hank as a close friend and business partner from his first computer, through User Lovable, IIC, DBT and ultimately as best man to my wedding. He was a brilliant man with a huge heart. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those whose life he touched and to his family whom he loved above all else.
Sleep well bro, we'll be needing you back here soon.

I have enjoyed working and being a friend of Hank Asher. When Hanks mother passed he said "Dying is a part of life, not the end of life". He also said "I awoke this morning with the realization that I won't see her until I pass to the other side". May you be in the arms of your mother my friend.

The fuller story about Hank Asher and, more importantly, the deeper meaning of his life for his family, friends, associates and for all private eyes is
one that we should all work to compile.
This will help to ensure that Hank is both remembered and respected for his work to unselfishly help those he knew and the many more he would never know.
Giving Hank Asher his due will provide
future generations a shining example of a purposeful life and will plant a big shade tree for Hank's final rest.

RIP Hank, Ben Harroll - P.I. Museum Founder/Curator, San Diego, CA

I am glad to have had the privilege of knowing you. Beginning with DBT, now thru TLO, and everything in between, I do believe you have done more for the investigative community than anyone else we could name. I have five children myself, and I have always appreciated your work and your contributions related to missing and exploited children.

Never will there be another person like Hank. I worked for him at Asher Waterproof Coatings and dated him for five years back in the 80s. Desiree was just an adorabe 2 year old and was the love of his life. We had kept in touch over the years, but not very much recently once Sari became sick. I know that devastated him because Sari was Hank's hero. Rest in peace, my friend.

I can think of no one who has contributed more to our profession and law enforcement. I'm on the other ened of the continent, yet Hank took the time to call me on a couple of occasions when I had issues with the first opening of TLO. Down-to-earth and personable. One of who I am so sorry I didn't get the opportunity to meet in person, maybe over a beer or something. Much love, prayers & thoughts to his family and close friends. He is undoubtedly wrapped in God's arms now. Bless you Hank .. !

Hank Asher was a wonderful person who contributed and helped so many people. This is a great loss. I got to know Hank after he helped me with a problem I was having that no other expert was able to solve. Months later it was my pleasure to return the favor to Hank when he called me and solicited my help for a situation he had in Northeast Florida.

Rest in peace Hank, you will be missed.
