Hyo Copinga Obituary

A 59-year-old Utah man vacationing in Palm Beach County died while diving near The Breakers Thursday.

Hyo H. Copinga, of Salt Lake City, was part of a group of 10 people, including Copinga's two daughters, who took the commercial dive boat Deep Obsession out toward Flower Patches reef, authorities said. The group's dive spot was about a mile from The Breakers in 60 feet of water.

After completing one dive, Copinga and his group went down again around 1:30 p.m. for a 45-minute dive, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. When the dive was over, the divemaster did a head count. Everyone but Copinga had resurfaced.

The Deep Obsession's captain notified authorities and the Coast Guard searched the area. Just before 4 p.m., divers on another boat, the Narcosis, found Copinga beneath the surface and pulled him up.

The Coast Guard rushed him to the Riviera Beach marina, trying to resuscitate him on the way. He was pronounced dead at the marina at 4:10 p.m., said Palm Beach Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Pete Palenzuela.

Investigators do not know what caused Copinga to die, but they are looking into possibilities that include equipment malfunction or a lightning strike. Rain and lightning were reported in the area at the time of the dive.

Copinga had been vacationing here with his wife, Charlotte, and two daughters, authorities said.

There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about Hyo and how unfair it is that he is gone. He was one of the coolest guys I knew, and everyone who new him is very lucky. I grew up with him and his kids and just wanted to say how grateful I am to have had that opportunity. He's a great person who will be remembered by all the awesome things he did and fun memories he created. He is truly missed.

I miss and Love you dad, I cannot believe you are gone and cannot thank you enough for everything you have given and taught all of us, I know you are watching over us in a different way now, but I cannot help but feel cheated out of more years with you here with us. I love you dad, you are the best dad anybody could ever ask for. Thank you for everything

Dear Family of Hyo, I knew Hyo when I was very young. He used to come to Escalante, Utah with Havey Dean Gates and help on the ranches. We were one of the lucky one to have him help us gather cattle on the KRS ranch. He was a big tease and very good looking. We always had a great time when he was around. We are sorry to hear of your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Sincerely,

Michelle Thornell

Dear Charlotte, Tiffany, Shannon, Danny, Katie and Kira,

Just days before departing to Floriday I visited with Hyo and Charlotte. We talked of John and Hyo gave me a lot of help and perspective. I'll always remember that last meeting as I knew that I could depend on Hyo for help and advice after John's passing. Hyo will be missed by so many people in many different ways.

Hyo and all the brothers could be so overwhelming at first, there was always a lot of pinching, poking and teasing. But you get over that because you know that they all had hearts of gold. Hyo did a lot for us over the years and I'll always be grateful to be a part of this family.

Hyo,

There have only been two other men in my life, my father being the first, that have had a profound effect on how I live my life. You are my mentor and teacher in life. The In-Law part of our relationship disappeared the moment I met you. We became brothers. You once told me that I will always have family in Salt Lake. You welcomed me into the Copinga Clan with open arms. I will never say goodbye to you because you are always in my heart and mind. There are not enough words to express my thanks and my love. I now say to you and your family to remember that they will always have a family where ever Lola and I are. See you on the other side.

Hyo was the light of my life. All my Brothers were, and now they are all gone. Hyo, I miss you with every ounce of my being. I don't really like this new world that I have to get used to. A world without brothers, is a world I'm having difficulty getting used to. The thing that keeps me going, is knowing that you are all okay. Of that I'm sure.

Charlotte, Tiffany, Shannon, Danny, Katie and Kira: You know how much you mean to me and also know that you can depend on me for anything. I Love you all so much.

Dear Charlotte and children,

We, tante Liesje and I, were and still are shocked after we heard the devastating news from Marijke.

I remember my cousin as a charming and energetic man who seemed to be always on the move. I saw him a lot of times at your mother-in-law's house where I Stayed. He was always like a whirlwind then. Checking whether his mother was doing well, at the same time checking the fridge, at the same time solving some minor problem (major problems didn't exist for Hyo), at the same time telling a joke, at the same time inviting us for a BBQ, and before I could blink my eyes he was already on the move again.

Charlotte, we deeply symphatize with you!

The Copinga Family,

I am saddened at the great loss you've suffered. Jared has such great "uncle" stories to share about his childhood and how important these men were to him. They taught him so many important things; especially how to be a wonderful Dad.

May the peace of the Lord be with you and your families.

Just the words "Uncle Hyo" brings a smile to my face. He was the highlight to my trips to SLC as a child. I loved the love and attention he showed me. I think God must be adding on to heaven to have needed my Daddy and Uncle Hyo both. Charlotte and family my thoughts and prayers are with you. I love you all so much.

Copinga Family,

At this time of incredible loss my thoughts and prayers are with you all. The pain and loss that you feel stands as a memorial to the amazing life that Hyo led and the enormous impact that he had on so many. Of course he will continue to have that same influence and bring that same measure of joy that he always has. As his heritage you too will continue to build and perpetuate his legacy.

Hyo made so much of his time here on earth. I was always struck by the joy and passion with which Hyo approached all aspects of his life. I had the fortunate opportunity to work for Hyo for a short period of time. He had an incredible work ethic and I learned so much from him. I was also impressed with the great pride he took in his work. Obviously he was such a powerful man, but there was also a great beauty and subtle detail in his work. That beauty and warmth was not just in his work, but was the foundation of his personality. I will always remember Hyo for his integrity, generousity, determination, and sincerity. May the Lord continue to bless and sustain you in this time of loss.

Dear Charlotte, Shannon, Tiffany, Danny, Katie and Kira,

Words are so inadequate at this devastating time of loss. We do want you to know of our love and prayers for each of you. We are so very grateful for the Copinga family. There are so many good memories. Hyo played a big part in making those times special, fun exciting and sometimes more than a little crazy! When Matt needed a summer job, Hyo was there to not only give him work but teach him so many important lessons about life and how to be a success. Hyo spoiled our Melissa, right along with Katie and Kira with countless outings, fun times and lots of laughter and love. He always called her "Melissa Manchester" even though she had no clue why. Hyo built our backyard basketball court for us and always showed interest in the boys athletic endeavors. His generous and giving nature blessed countless lives. Hyo is greatly loved by so many and will be greatly missed. We are blessed and so very grateful to call him friend. We know that he isn't really gone, just in another place continuing to make life better and easier for others just like always. His example of devotion to his family and friends lives on and it is our prayer that you will find peace and comfort until you can be together again. Families are forever.

With Love,

Dear Charlotte and family,

Our family met yours through the Shrontz's. Hyo was a strong person, both physically and spirtually. I am sure he is watching over all of you and will continue to protect you.

Several years ago, I asked Hyo to come to my office to see if he could help me with a remodel. AS he was surveying the room that needed to be redone, he discovered some anchor bolts in the wall behind a big mirror. These bolts had to come out and I had no idea how to get them out. Without a word, Hyo pulled his hammer from his belt and with four powerful blows drove them right through the dry wall and into the space between the studs. End of problem. He was a force of nature and a great deal of fun to be around.

Unless I am way off, Duane has some jobs already lined up for Hyo to get to.

With love and compassion,

John (Mindy) Ramsey

They say it takes a village to raise a child, for me it took four brothers to shape a boy into a man. Even with his own children, Hyo always took the time to help, play with or tease his nephews, nieces, brothers and sisters. Thanks your for the many fond summer memories on a job, on the lakes and on the farm. I hope my children can one day look at me as half the father and leader you are. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I am devastated to learn of the tragic and untimely death of our longtime friend Hyo. My associations were mostly in the distant past, but have always appreciated his sincere honesty, thoughtfullness, and friendship. I will sadly miss his positive enthusiasm for his endeavors as well as his interest in the activities of others. Although he had no blue uniform, he was faster . . ., more powerful . . ., and DID leap tall buildings. I look forward to the day when Hyo will once again lead us on the forced marches through the wildernesses of Utah. My sincere condolences to family and friends.

I am sorry to hear that Hyo has left us so soon. It has been a long time since I have seen him and I am glad to read about all the laughter and goodness he has spread amongst his family and associates. I met Hyo when his family moved here from Holland. We were in the same second grade class. Two of my most vivid memories of second grade are when he leaped over the orange crate walls of our little "in class" library, and when he climbed on top of the school during recess. We gathered around in fear that he would fall, but he just grinned happily.

I send my condolences to his family for their great loss. However, I'm sure that the memories made with this lively, remarkable man are choice and comforting.

Every Sunday Hyo would rough us up...we deserved it, we were 12 year old boys! It wasn't until I came home from my mission (and was bigger than Hyo) that I didn't feel intimidated by his physical banter...and it wasn't until then that I realized how grateful I was that he taught us never to let someone push us around- to stand up for ourselves and what we believe in. Hyo, you are a good man. Thank you for everything!

We are stunned and so saddened at this news. Hyo was a larger-than-life presence wherever he was. Everyone loved Hyo that knew him. He was such a tease. I'll never forget him throwing me in your swimming pool while I was dressed for a day on the town, not at the pool.
