Janet Hargrave Obituary
JANET HARGRAVE Janet Hobbet Hargrave, age 80, passed away peacefully after a long illness at her home in Gainesville, Florida on Friday evening, September 5, 2003. A resident of West Palm Beach for nearly 50 years, Janet grew up in the small town of Eagle Grove, Iowa, where she participated in a variety of musical activities and served as drum major, class president, yearbook editor, and valedictorian. Janet attended St. Olaf College in Minnesota, later transferring to the University of Minnesota to complete a degree in social work. After pursuing a brief career in social work, she married Jack Hargrave, then a yacht captain. The couple ran a charter boat on Lake Superior and crewed on a private yacht before starting their family. Janet enjoyed raising three children: Susan, Steven, and Scott; taking on volunteer jobs such as girl scout and cub scout leader. She also made many contributions to the First Lutheran Church, leading children's music programs, singing in the adult choir, and performing solos on special occasions. Once all of her children were in school, Janet went to work, first as a kindergarten music teacher, and later as the Assistant Director of Workship, the community service program at Palm Beach Atlantic College, where she served for ten years. What Janet cherished most of all were the people in her life151;her family, friends, and people of all ages and backgrounds whom she befriended wherever she went. Janet traveled widely with family members, often accompanying her husband to visit clients and associates of his naval architecture business. Her kindness and cheerful nature touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed. Janet also enjoyed the arts, delighting in everything from musical productions at the Kravis Center to student performances at the college and other venues. She was a frequent visitor to local museums, such as the Norton and the Hibel Museum, where she was especially fond of the paintings of mothers and children. Her own talents included playing the piano, singing, and photographing people, all of which she loved to share with others. Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Jack Hargrave; her son, Steven Hargrave; and her grandson, Joshua Hargrave. Janet is survived by her brother, Richard Hobbet of Lafayette, CA; her daughter, Susan Hargrave and friend Paul Light of Arlington, MA; her son, Scott, daughter-in-law, Jayne, and granddaughter, Stephanie of Gainesville, FL. She also leaves her sister-in-law, Bernice Hobbet of Durham, NC; brother-in-law, Bill Hargrave of Sandston, VA; sister-in-law, Shirley Hargrave of Micaville, NC; sister- in-law, Janet Gavic of Hudson, WI; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, September 20 at the First Lutheran Church, 2740 Parker Ave., West Palm Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the Janet and Jack Hargrave Memorial Scholarship Fund. Checks can be made out to Palm Beach Atlantic University (indicating that they are for the Hargrave scholarship fund) and sent to the university's Development Office at P.O.
