John Thorp Blunt, age 83, Village of Golf, FL.
John was born on December 20, 1936 in Evanston, IL to Barbara Thorp Blunt and John E. Blunt, III. On July 19, 2020, he passed away peacefully at his home in the Village of Golf, FL, surrounded by his loving family.
John grew up in Winnetka, IL, attending North Shore Country Day School and New Trier High School. He received an A.B. degree at Dartmouth College in 1958, and received Masters degrees at The Amos Tuck School of Business Administration and Thayer School of Engineering in 1959. While at Dartmouth, he met Susan Fencl of Evanston, IL and they were married on January 11, 1960.
John had an extensive career marked by fiduciary and financial experience that spanned over 55 years. He joined The Northern Trust Company in 1960, and held a number of positions during his 30 year career there in tax, trust administration, family business and strategic planning. He retired in 1989 as President of Northern Investment Management Company, an asset-management arm of the bank. During his career he served as director of a number of corporations, including Schwinn Bicycle and Union Special Corporation, where he was Chairman of the Audit Committee. After retiring from Northern Trust, he formed Blunt Associates, a registered investment advisory firm specializing in the management of family trusts.
John served in the past in many capacities for numerous charitable and social organizations, including the Northfield Community Fund, United Christian Community Services, Allendale Association, Glen View Club, Delray Dunes Golf, Inc. and The Country Club of Florida. He was a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Allendale Association and a former President of The Country Club of Florida.
His pastimes included playing golf, paddle tennis, bicycling, adventurous travel with family and friends, and the active involvement he and Susan enjoyed with his children and grandchildren over the years.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Susan Fencl Blunt; his four children – Jack Blunt (Mitch), Rick Blunt (Roma), Barbara Vaelli (Cenna), and Deb Collard (Hal); and eight grandchildren – Natalie Blunt, Derek Blunt, Avery Collard, Rieth Collard, Zoe Collard, John Blunt, Matt Blunt and Luke Blunt. He was pre-deceased by his grandson Brian Blunt. Due to current circumstances, a celebration of John's life will be held at a later date.
