Family-Placed Obituary

LEONARD BERKOWITZ "Len" Age 81, of Boca Raton, FL, died Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Boca Community Hospital. Len was born November 14, 1929 in Bronx, NY. A graduate of Wilmington High School in 1947, he entered the U.S. Navy shortly thereafter. Len served as a Radarman 2nd class at Atlantic City Naval Air Station. Upon his discharge, he went into business with his father and brother at SunRipe Banana Company from the 1950's to the 1980's. Their business was originally located at 4th and French Streets in Wilmington. Leonard was also a commercial Real Estate agent in Delaware and Florida. He held other positions such as a clerk for Tuesday Morning in Boca Raton, FL, and a salesman for a company that sold energy-efficient self-contained water heaters. Len is survived by his son, Ed (Sandy) Berkowitz of Wilmington, DE, grandchildren, Alexis Berkowitz of Charlotte, NC and Eric Berkowitz of Fairfax, VA. He was predeceased by his parents, Hyman and Sarah Berkowitz; brother, Samuel I. Berkowitz, and adopted son, Scott David Arthurs Berkowitz. A special "Thank You" for the care, friendship, assistance, and service that was given to Leonard by George Gates, Doug Kendall, and Ana Vergne. Services will be private. I met Lenny after his accident and saw him almost everyday. He was a very brave man who dealt with his injury and illness with a strength of character that I have come to admire greatly. He will be sorely missed.
