Lonnie LEONARD Obituary

LEONARD, Lonnie

Lonnie Leonard, age 80, of West Palm Beach, FL peacefully passed away July 1, 2013. His memory will forever be cherished by his spouse, Shirley Leonard; son, Stephen Ashley Leonard; brother-in-law, Harlan Richard Holmes, Jr. and numerous nieces and nephews. A Military Honor will be celebrated in Lonnie's memory on Wednesday, July 3, 2013, 1:00 PM at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens, 5601 Greenwood Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407. The family requests that contributions in lieu of flowers be sent to Paws2help, 2061 Indian Road, West Palm Beach, FL 33409. Lonnie Leonard was a native of Georgia. For forty years he has exhibited his work in Atlanta and several other cities. Since moving to Palm Beach in 1980, he has primarily shown his work in Palm Beach. His paintings are done with a painting knife-never with a brush. There is a freshness and clarity of color due to his applying paint with authority and leaving it. His work has been described by critics as "mystic-realism - giving the viewer a sense of well-being - of having visited a place worth visiting". His style of work is unique - no one paints quite like him. Everyone can recognize a Lonnie Leonard painting. Mr. Leonard has won several awards in Georgia and Florida and his work has been selected by many private collectors, the Director of the Mint Museum and the Director of the Whitney Museum. The one thing that pleased Mr. Leonard most was that his paintings were so universally accepted. This love of his work is probably due to Mr. Leonard's belief that art should never be involved with trends or fashion - it should speak for itself and it should be timeless.

Looking around our home we have the pleasure of daily being reminded of Lonnie and his dear family, Shirley and Stephen. So sorry for your loss and the loss of this wonderful talent. Lonnie taught me more in one afternoons visit about art and the ability to make a living in art and being happy doing it than anyone ever before or after. I'm lucky to have met him and lucky to be surrounded by his artworks.
