Lori Sklar Obituary

Family-Placed Funeral Notice

LORI HODGES SKLAR 49, beloved wife of Bill Sklar, passed away on December 30, 2006. Lori was born January 16, 1957 in Miami, Florida. She attended Coral Gables High School ('74), Washington University (B.A.B.S. – ‘79), the Wharton School, and the University of Miami (M.B.A. with honors). As the founder and President of Park Lane Properties, she pursued a successful career in commercial real estate. However, her greatest joy in life came from helping others and teaching, “Mitzvot,” the doing of good deeds. As a dedicated member of Congregation B'nai Israel in Boca Raton, she served for more than 13 years as Chair of the Kantor Family Center of Justice, the social action arm of the synagogue. Through the Kantor Family Center of Justice, she coordinated and performed a broad spectrum of continuing programs to help those in need and to empower them. Lori, together with her beloved husband and sisters, Linda Kivitz and Debra Fishman, founded Jacob International and Reach Global. These organizations (www.jacobintl.org and www.reachglobal.org) are dedicated to educating women about the benefits of genetic testing to break the cycle of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Lori and Bill loved to celebrate life during their 24 year relationship with their family and traveling to explore the majesty of G-d's creations. Lori loved nature and together with Bill they would search for wildlife on their many travels around the world, including the Canadian Rockies and Switzerland. Among Lori's greatest joys were her adopted children, her niece, Jennifer Kivitz and nephews, Brandon Fishman and Jeffrey Kivitz. She reveled in their accomplishments, and loved to laugh with them. Lori was a deeply devoted daughter to her parents, Leonard Hodges and Phyllis Smith. Lori's best friends were her sisters, Linda Kivitz and Debra Fishman, who were her buddies and caregivers. Lori's greatest attribute was her kindness to others. Whether it was the stranger in need or a family member, Lori lived her life believing our place on earth was to help others and to heal the world by performing Mitzvot at every opportunity. Lori's life was dedicated to Mitzvot, kindness, family, love and laughter. We celebrate Lori's life as it has forever blessed all those who knew and loved her. A celebration of Lori's life will be held on Thursday, January 4 at 2 P.M. at Congregation B'nai Israel, 2200 Yamato Road, Boca Raton, Florida. 561-241-8118. Interment will follow at Temple Beth El, 333 Southwest 4th Avenue, Boca Raton, FL 33432. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jacob International, P.O. Life is not a path of coincidence, happinstance and luck, but rather an inexplainable meticulously charted cause for one to touch the lives of others and make a difference in the world. Certainly Lori has done this and her spirit, aura and good deeds will outlive us all. We will Pray with our Feet on January 20 as a CBI team in Lori's honor and for all of us who continue to fight battle.

I went to school with Lori, from West Lab Elementary through Gables High, and distinctly remember her as a bright and beautiful person.

I am saddened by her passing, both because she was a classmate and because of the good that I have now learned she did in her life.

Through Lori's work and the legacy of Jacob International, we must be hopeful that lives will be saved.

My sincere condolences to Lori's family and friends.

Bill, I am so sorry to hear of Lori's passing. Having suffered the loss of my son, Michael, two years ago I know that there are no words that can comfort the pain you feel. Just know that there are people who are praying for you and thinking of you.

Lori is an inspiration to all of us who survive her. She endured her illness with hope, faith and incredible courage. Even more so, her dedication to tikkun olam and all the wonderful mitzvot she performed leave the world a better place. We can honor her memory by carrying on her legacy of charity and good deeds.
Lori will be sorely missed by all of us who loved and admired her.

Lori, We loved you so very much because you were you. You were the only one who we would have imagined our unborn daughter would be. You were the warmest, nicest, smartest, sweetest, best girl of fifteen who we watched grow into adulthood. None of those characteristics ever diminished, but rather became more intense each year you grew older. You were the one we all wished we had been the parents. We loved you from afar and wish we you had been in every day of our lives. May God bless you and keep you among the holiest of all his creations.
