Marysue Barnes Obituary

Dr. MARYSUE BARNES 81, Cellist and Emeritus Professor of music at Florida Atlantic University, died January 12, 2003 in Royal Palm Nursing Center in Vero Beach, Florida. Dr. Barnes was a member of honorary music fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota, Music Teachers National Association, American String Teachers Association, Florida Federation of Music Clubs, and Broward County Music Teachers Association. In 1960, she was the first woman to receive the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Music Theory from Florida State University. Earlier teaching positions include the Music Schools of University of Nebraska, University of Wyoming, University of Northern Colorado, and Texas Women's University in Denton, Texas. While teaching and serving as administrator in FAU's Music Department, Dr. Barnes played cello in the FAU Symphony, and as needed in both the Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale Symphonies. In addition to her many friends in Florida music circles, Dr. MarySue Barnes leaves to mourn her passing, a sister-in-law, Anna Belle Barnes of Vero Beach; a number of nieces and nephews, among them, nephews: Tommy Barnes of Vero Beach, and Key Barnes of Quincy, and nieces: Mary Ann Brennan of Atlanta, and Harriet Hobbs of Tallahassee; several great-nephews; and many other friends and relatives. For many years, she shared a home in Boca Raton with Dr. Rita J. Hutcherson, pianist and long-time friend. Interment will be in the family plot in Quincy, Florida. A Memorial Service will be held at Kraeer Mortuary Chapel, 1353 North Federal Highway, Boca Raton at 3:00 PM Sunday, January 26, 2003. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to Hospice, Alzheimer Disease Research, or a charity of their choosing.
