Richard ROCKENBACH Obituary

ROCKENBACH, Richard William
Richard William Rockenbach, born April 4, 1931 passed away September 19, 2015. Survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Bares Rockenbach; his three sons, Mark, Bard and Kurt; and his grandchildren, Kate, Seth, Jillian and Bard. Richard earned his mechanical engineering degree from New York University in 1952, and a master's degree in aeronautical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Richard enjoyed a 35 year career in engineering, working first for United Aircraft Research Lab in Hartford, CT and then moving to North Palm Beach to work for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, where he quickly became a Senior Project Engineer. He never regretted moving to Florida, and made the most of the state's beautiful weather and outdoor activities. He will be remembered for his dedication to his wife, his sons, his mother and for proving the value of hard work and integrity. He will also be remembered for his significant contributions to the aerospace industry and engine design.

Dear Doris and Family,

Mary and I send our deepest sympathy on Richard's death.
I enjoyed working with Richard and traveling to and from work in the car pool. I remember his dry humor and his views of many current events which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Richard was a very dear person in my life. I was blessed and honored to be a part of his. Not only was I a caregiver for him, he was a friend to me . He always had great advice, a hand to hold, words of wisdom and a smile to share. Richard you will always be remembered and have a place in my heart. You are at peace now. Love, Rachel

"Dick" Rockenbach left a giant legacy to the aerospace propulsion industry. In the 1950's at the wind tunnel labs at Pratt & Whitney he led the acquisition of critical cascade aerodynamic data which was the foundation of compression systems design at P&W for decades. Many commercial and military jet engines, and the famous airplanes they powered, were designed with the data he meticulously acquired. Later he led the Military compression systems team, and was there when I was hired, and on my first day he took me to lunch. I didn't know all this, and he was humble enough that I had to find out his industry contributions as I grew in my analytical engineering position. I deeply respect Dick and will carry his memory with me always.

What a guy! Definitely marched to a different drummer than the average engineer, but I enjoyed every minute with Dick at work and sailing on Lake Mangonia.
