Robert Cromwell Obituary

Family-Placed Funeral Notice

ROBERT FREDERICK CROMWELL, ESQ Robert Frederick Cromwell, of Jupiter, Florida, known as “Mullet” to his many friends, passed away on January 6, 2007. He was born on October 16, 1918 in Evansville, Indiana, the only child of John and Irene Cromwell. Bob never knew his father who died when Bob was an infant; his father died from tuberculosis which he contracted on the battlefields of France during World War I. As a toddler, Bob moved to south Florida with his mother who married his stepfather Henry Zill. They built their home in Riviera Beach, across the street from what was then an alligator and ostrich farm, later becoming The Spanish Courts. Bob's mother died in 1928 and he and his stepfather continued living in the family homestead during his boyhood. After attending Northboro Junior High, Bob graduated in 1938 from Palm Beach High School where he played football. He then left for the University of Florida in Gainesville where he was active in student body politics, ROTC and won his athletic letter on the boxing team. After U.F. graduation in 1942 with a degree in business administration, Bob joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, became a pilot and spent three years in the European Theatre, flying troop carriers, leaving in 1945 as a Captain. Bob gave credit to an old friend, the late Elwyn Middleton, for suggesting what to do now that the war was over. The advice was to return to U.F. and attend law school, which he did, graduating in February of 1948. While in law school, he also ran a branch office in Gainesville of the Young-Mann Agency of Jacksonville, a fire and casualty insurance business. After law school, Bob returned to Riviera Beach and hung out his shingle in the old homestead on U.S. 1. He quickly became active in the community, serving as Town Clerk for the next two years. He was also a member of the Lions Club and the Riviera Beach Chamber of Commerce, serving as its president in the mid-fifties and on its board for more than twenty years. Perhaps his most enjoyable chore for the Chamber was his participation for several years as Santa Claus in its annual Christmas in Dixie parade which began in 1953. In August 1950 permission came to establish the Riviera Beach Bank (later named First Marine Bank & Trust). Bob was one of its founding directors. He also helped establish Cromwell Griffin Insurance Agency of Riviera Beach, First American Bank in North Palm Beach and Citizens Bank on Southern Boulevard. During these years he was also active in the Palm Beach County Bar Association, serving as its president in 1955. Also in 1955, Bob and a group of other business and professional men opened the north county's first savings and loan association, first named Riviera Beach Federal Savings and Loan Association, later changed to Community Federal. Bob served as either president or board chairman until 1998. He was the last surviving founder of this institution, which grew in those years from a little store front office to twenty offices, from Lake Worth to Fort Pierce. In the late seventies, Bob served as president of the Florida Savings and Loan League. In 1979 he withdrew from the active practice of law to devote his full time to Community Federal. Bob had traveled widely over most of the globe. One of his interesting trips was touring the Soviet Union in 1964 with 32 other Florida businessmen, under sponsorship of the State Department. No matter where he went though, he always dearly loved Palm Beach County with all it has to offer, and the Bahamas, maintaining he saw no reason why anyone would want to go north of the Salerno Inlet nor west of the turnpike. And all of his life he thoroughly loved the ocean and all water sports, particularly fishing, boating and scuba diving. He received his scuba diving certification in 1977 at the age of 59. As an alternative career, he often said he would have chosen to be a party boat captain or a commercial fisherman. Bob was a member of the Florida Bar, the American Bar Association, Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and University of Florida's Grand Guard. He was a leader in development of the county's north end and had great concern that we be able to maintain the beautiful aspects of our land which attract people to move here, while still making room for them. Bob will be sorely missed by his family, his former colleagues and many friends. Surviving Bob are his son, Henry Frederick Cromwell, daughter-in-law, Kathleen, grandson, Jason Frederick of Palm Beach Gardens; granddaughter, Michelle Cromwell-Kelly, husband, Vincent, great-granddaughter Ava of Jupiter; a cousin, Marcia Zill Brancolino of Palm Beach Gardens; and Bob's beloved companion of 25 years, Shirley Smith. The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 PM, Thursday, January 11, 2007 at Howard-Price Funeral Home, 754 U.S. Highway One, North Palm Beach. A memorial service in honor of Bob Cromwell will take place at Trinity United Methodist Church, 9625 North Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens on Friday, January 12 at 10 AM. A reception for family and friends will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in the Mullet's memory to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407. It has taken me awhile to write something, because, quite honestly, I don't know what to say. Bob, was my step dad and I was fortunate and proud to have him in my life for many years. He was a great man that loved life. Everyone seemed to know and respect him wherever we went. I know he is in a better place and had a full rich life. I remember he always used to say "If you live right- the Lord will take care of You"... and now it's his time to be taken care of.... Bob, I love and miss you... You will always be in my heart.

The term that "Mullet", "Body" Griffith and myself roomed together before WWII was most interesting and unusual.
We were all from W.P.B., very little money, but with a desire to graduate kept us going.
Interesting enough, we all three also graduated from Law College, Cromwell, Griffith from UofF and me from Stetson after WWUII.
Each of us lose a little of our selvess when long time friends depart.
I'll sorely miss you "Mullet".
I also knew Bob in Palmb Beach High School.

Our loving prayers and thoughts to Shirley and the Cromwell family.
We are truly honored to have known Bob, yet saddened to say goodbye. His kind, gentle heart touched so many lives and left an impact on us all. His passion and zest for life was evident in the way he lived it, through not only his eyes, but the eyes of those around him. Our memories of Bob will include all the pranks that Shirley would play on Bob, and vice versa. He really met his match in her, and she in him. We will forever cherish the memories made. He is loved.

I was very saddened to hear of the death of Mr. "C". I used to work at Community Federal, Riviera Beach and then later at Cromwell, Remsen and Pfaffenber. It was my first job in the U.S.A. and I must say, it was a pleasure to work at CFS. Mr. "C" always had a smile and something pleasant to say to all the employees. I know he will be sadly missed

Oh Henry,
Was sorry to hear of your Father's passing. His pain and suffering are at last gone.
I'm sure he and my dad are chatting about Bahamas and who got the biggest grouper or most lobster. The bank charter papers are probably being filed next week for their new bank. Dad has been waiting for him. Remember the memories and especially his gigantic smile that always accompanied his presence.
Love ya man!

The Cromwells,
I will never forget the countless times Jason and I would walk over to visit with Pops just to catch him sleeping in his chair with the paper in his lap. Pops was a great man and a awesome grandfather. With his stories of fishing the piers for Snook too riding the sea turtle back into the Jupiter Inlet, there was never a dull moment. Pops had a smile that could light up the whole room and he sure loved to use it. All the memories I spent with your family will never be forgotten. Sorry that I can't be there but my thoughts, prayers and love will.

I first met Mr. Cromwell when I was about 5 years old. My grandmother cleaned his house, and I would go with her. There are so many times that I remember being there and seeing Mr. Cromwell. I would see him on the second floor in his chair reading the paper. Another memory i have is walking up the stairs, and he would be hiding around the corner of the wall just waiting to SCARE me. He would just bust out laughing. He was such a prankster. His laugh was so contagious! I've known him about 15 years, he was such a great person. I'm so sad to hear that he has passed, but I know that his spirit and kindness will live on through his family. I send my love to all of you!

Mr. Cromwell was my neighbor on Singer Island. Henry and I used to play in the pool. Some of Mr. Cromwell's friends, like Mr. Colbath and Johnny Weissmuller came over to use the pool too. Mr. Colbath was, I'm told the original Jack Armstrong and Mr. Weissmuller was the original actor who played Tarzan. Mr. Weissmuller, after some coaxing gave us the famous Tarzan yell. Mr. Cromwell used to take us to the Royal Castle over by the old Community Federal and buy us the big box of hamburgers and take us fishing. He was a real good man.

My memories of Bob Cromwell go back more than 50 years ago when my parents, Lou and Ann Stone, moved to Riviera Beach and opened Triangle Paint & Supply Co. I remember Bob through the Riviera Beach Bank, the Riviera Beach Savings & Loan, and of course the Chamber. Bob Cromwell was "Mr. Riviera Beach." He was a fine man, a true gentleman. My deepest condolences to Henry and to all of his family.

My deepest sympathy goes out to your family. I did not personally know Mr. Cromwell, although I heard many wonderful stories about him from his Grandson Jason and my Daughter Crystal, from which I could easily tell that Jason's Grandfather was the world to him. I am sorry I never had the pleasure of meeting him. My prayers are with you and may God help you through this time of need.

My heart-felt sympathy to the family and friends of Mr. Cromwell. I "saw" him only through the eyes of Jason and Crystal and thought of him as a kind and generous man, unafraid to give of himself freely.

My prayers and condolences go out to Mr. Cromwell's family. I first met Mr. Cromwell at my Mother and Father's home in PBG (Lindsey and Mossie Jarrell). I remember what a wonderful friendship they had and how Mr. Cromwell would take us fishing. Later when I grew up Mr. Cromwell gave me help and advice about my life and work. He was a wonderful friend. BJ Jarrell

Although I did not know Bob as well as I did the rest of his family, I feel certain that he left this world content with the many parts he had played in it, especially in helping to mold Henry into a wonderful man. Bob left surrounded by those he loved most, knowing they would continue the cycle of his life and hold him dear until they are reunited.

When I think of Bob Cromwell (Mullet), I remember back thirty to forty years ago which were the best days of my childhood, bar-none! There are so Many, Many "Good Times" with Mullet. & I still reflect on those days on almost daily.
I clearly remember Mullet, his son Henry, my late Father & Mother; Robert and Mary Evelyn alone with our boat, the "Bald Eagle" and Mullets boat, naturally named the "Mullet." And the many, many adventures around Florida and the Bahamas. Plus; those trips with Mullet in our families Cessna 210 or Beach Bonanza. I am smiling this moment of some of the light hearted moments running through my mind.
What a wonderful and blessed time it was to spend with all. Sometime ago I came across a trove of old 8-mm movie film and sure to life, there's Mullet, Dad and many of the now dearly departed friends. Those were truly the good times.
My sincere condolences to Henry and his family and all of those who were close to Mullet. May he rest in peace. Kindest Regards, Bob Griffith III. Winter Haven, FL
