Robert Livingston Obituary

July 23, 1935 - March 21, 2018 Robert Michael Livingston MD passed away at his home in Vero Beach Florida at the age of 82. Bob was born in Binghamton, New York to Sarah (Levene) and Frank Livingston. He was a brilliant person. He was valedictorian at Blair Academy in New Jersey, graduated cum laude from Harvard and earned his M.D. from Yale. He completed his residency at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and went on to build a popular and busy practice in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey in the 1960s and 70s. He was a courageous trailblazer for women's reproductive rights and the pro-choice movement, and opened the first freestanding birthing center in New Jersey. He then moved his practice to Boca Raton Florida until his retirement. He had thousands of grateful patients and he inspired his three children (and many of their friends) to become physicians. Bob was an outstanding clarinetist and loved playing throughout his life. He was an avid daily reader of the New York Times. He also enjoyed boating with his family in his younger days . He had an excellent sense of humor, even appearing at a holiday party as his alter ego Dymo Label Man. Bob will be lovingly remembered by his children Stephen (Sandy), Wendy (Abram), and Jeff (Michele); 7 grandchildren Jordan, Suzy, Josh, Julia, Jacob, Liam, and Miles. Contributions in his memory may be made to Temple Beth Shalom, 365 43rd Avenue, Vero Beach, FL 32968. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00PM Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Temple Beth Shalom, Vero Beach, FL. Arrangements are under the direction of Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach. Dr. Livingston -- when he was in his Englewood Cliffs, NJ office, delivered my firstborn in NYC at the Lying-In Hospital in the 60s on York Ave.. He was a superb doctor--so kind, knowledgable and willing to explain what was happening each step of the way. He answered all my questions, too. I named my son Michael, after Dr. Livingston's middle name. He is almost 57 today. My deep condolences to his family and loved ones.

I was a Medical secretary for Dr. Livingston. I began working for him in his home, then helped him set up his practice in Boca Raton. He was the most caring, most personable doctor Ive ever known. He really listened to his patients and in addition to his professional advice and care, he had pamphlets to hand out in reference to their particular problems when it was feasible. He and I were both clarinet players, and I enjoyed listening to him play his clarinet to Music Minus One. What a worthwhile life he led.

For your stand of compassion and courage in support of so many women and families here in New Jersey, both in your general obstetrics work and for supporting the woman's right to choose how, whether and when to have a family. I never knew Dr. Livingston but some of our reproductive justice advocates here in NJ say we all owe him a debt. Thank you for your legacy...I hope the family knows it lives on here in the Garden State.

I spent many visits in the Englewood Cliffs office. If it was not for Dr. L, I would not have had the most beautiful healthy son I have today.(now will be 50 in August.) Born in Cornell Hospital NY.
It was so sad for me when I was told he was going to Florida.
I have never had another great Dr. like him to this day.

Dr. Livingston delivered me and my sister in the late 1960s. I have childhood photos on his boat, as he had forged a friendship with my parents beyond "doctor / patient".

He was a great doctor who helped my mother to conceive when she was a bit older than the norm at that time.

Clearly he was a fearless pioneer with issues that are still in the news 50 years later.
In my home as a child his name was mentioned with the greatest respect and affection for as long as I can remember.

Sincere condolences to his family and loved ones on the loss of this great man.
