Stephen Schnellenberger Obituary

Stephen Schnellenberger, son of Florida Atlantic coach Howard Schnellenberger, died Sunday. He was 48. Mr. Schnellenberger had multiple endocrine neoplasia type IIB, one of the rarest diseases of the endocrine glands. In recent years, he required constant care after lapsing into a coma following surgery in 2003. The oldest of Howard Schnellenberger's three sons, Mr. Schnellenberger was born Jan. 27, 1960, in Lexington, Ky., and lived with his parents in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Los Angeles and Miami. He was active in sports when he was young and ran cross-country for Miami Pace High School. Mr. Schnellenberger attended the University of Florida before graduating from the University of Miami with a business degree and worked in real estate, insurance and computer sales. A memorial gathering will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday at the Kraeer Funeral home in Boca Raton. A memorial Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Boca Raton.

Dear Mr. and Mrs Schnellenberger,
My name is Linda Hageman. As a long time resident of South Florida I was saddened about the passing of your son. My family also has multiple endocrine neoplasia and I was first diagnosed and treated in Miami. Many advances have been made in this endocrine area and I am only more saddened that your son had MEN IIB. My husband and are dedicating ourselves to the education and support of patients and their families affected with this MEN. We will be praying for you and your family. Linda Hageman, RN

Stephen was one of my best and closest friends. He was there for me in a time of need and never expected anything in return. He was as genuine as anyone could be. Stephen, I'll miss you buddy, but one day we'll meet again. My warmest regards to the Schnellenberger family. Marc
