Family-Placed Obituary

STUART WARREN DON Stuart Warren Don, 94 of Delray Beach and London, UK and formerly of Plainfield, NJ passed away in Florida on February 2, 2009. Mr. Don was born in Troy, NY, son of Stuart Morrison Don and Elisabeth Houghton. He was educated at Fesenden and Hotchkiss schools and attended Princeton University in 1933 where he made many lifelong friends and took a lead part in a number of activities. In 1937, he joined the Bank of Boston. In 1939 he joined the US Army serving in counter intelligence, initially in Washington, DC, but in 1943 he was posted to London, UK. He was later awarded the Bronze Heart and the Croix de Guerre. Following the war, Mr. Don served as a military attachŽ in the US Embassy in London, retiring from the army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He rejoined the Bank of Boston, but in 1955 he went to London to open up the operations of the Bank of Manhattan. Following the merger with Chase Bank, he joined Chemical Bank to start up their operations in London. Following his retirement from Chemical Bank, he joined a firm of executive recruitment consultants in London. During his time in London, he took a leading role in the American Community, serving as President of the American Chamber of Commerce, and on the boards of the American School, the English Speaking Union, the Pilgrims Society and other institutions. In 1938 he married Elsie Burke Foster and they made many friends in England where he pursued his love of fox hunting from his home in Gloucestershire. They had three daughters and Elsie passed away in 1983. In 1985 he married Anne Thorneycroft who passed away in 1996. Mr. Don is survived by three daughters: Virginia Don Hebditch, Martha Don Nicholson and Wendy Don Adams, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were held February 11, 2009 at All Saints Church in Princeton, NJ with burial in the churchyard next to his wife Elsie. A memorial service will be held at the Grosvenor Chapel, London, UK on March 25, 2009. LORNE & SONS FUNERAL HOME, Delray Beach in charge of arrangements. Though saddened by his loss, I am consoled by the surest feeling that Mr. Don now walks with his heavanly father in the great beyond. My sincere sympathies to his family whose devotion ,respect and caring were so exceptional. May your memories of better days fill your hearts.
