Richard Watkins Obituary

Richard Farrell Watkins, of Cibola, Arizona, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, in Surprise, Arizona, just one day after celebrating his 81st birthday.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, Richard graduated from Palo Verde High in 1962 and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Marketing from Arizona State University in 1969.

He also served in the army/national guard throughout the mid 60's until graduating from college.

In 1972, Richard moved to Cibola with his first wife, Brenda, to take over the family farm, where he raised cotton and alfalfa hay. He poured his heart into farming, especially when it came to growing cotton, and he always had his kids by his side, his greatest joy of his life.

He is survived by his three children: Stephen Watkins, Michael (Stephanie)Watkins, and Emily(David) Taylor; five grandchildren: Chase, Max, Isabella, Alice, and William, and multiple cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Richard had a passion for Volkswagens, especially collecting, building, and painting custom Baja Bugs and buggies for the local community. He loved spending his summers on the river and winters in the desert or at Glamis sand dunes.

Known for his signature thick black mustache, sun-tanned skin, and mesh farmer's hat, Richard was the life of every room. He had an unforgettable sense of humor was the funniest guy in every room and was always quick with a joke or prank to make those around him laugh and smile.

He is also remembered by his former wives, Brenda L. Watkins (1969 - 1985) and Donna Hoover Watkins (1999 - 2017).

A memorial service will be held at the American Legion in Blythe, California, on June 14, 2025, at 4:00 p.m.

I grew up with Richard. As kids we played street hockey in the Safeway parking lot.

We attended High School together and both had a big interest is cars as teen agers.

Richard had the greatest sense of humor and was one funny guy. He made me laugh every time we saw each other. Richard was an excellent auto mechanic and painter. He had a sweet 53 chevy when we were kids.

God took a very good friend, may he rest in peace.

All should know how much you loved being a father. You bragged a lot about the kids cause you were so proud. I hope you didn’t suffer a long illness and Jesus will have his arms open to welcome such a kind soul.
