David Scarbrough Obituary

David Scarbrough

June 8, 1947 - November 5, 2025

David Kendall Scarbrough, known affectionately as Dave, Davy, Mark Twain, or The Dude, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 5:50 a.m. His final hours were spent in the warm company of his beloved life partner Mary and his adoring daughters Andrea and Steph. The positivity, curiosity and generosity of spirit that was Dave's gift to all who knew him never once wavered throughout his short illness.

Born on June 8, 1947, in Quincy, Ill., to Ernie and Ruth (Vollbracht) Scarbrough, Dave grew up with a deep appreciation for family, hard work, and laughter. From his earliest years helping on family farms and learning to drive tractors on country roads, he carried a lifelong love of people and stories. A proud graduate of Quincy High School's Class of 1965, he was an enthusiastic Blue Devils basketball fan, faithfully attending every game-especially during their state championship seasons.

Dave excelled in math and science, which led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Drake University, graduating in 1971. While at Drake, he was a member of the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity. Encouraged by his brother Ron, Dave entered a profession that perfectly suited his compassion and warmth. Throughout his career, he treated his customers like family-always ready with a listening ear, a bit of humor, and sound advice.

His career as a pharmacist spanned more than four decades, including service at Skaggs Drugs in Quincy, Illinois, Albertson's Pharmacy in Clearwater, Florida (where he was honored as Pharmacist of the Year), Kmart Pharmacy in Illinois, and finally CVS Pharmacy, where he worked until his retirement in 2015.

Dave's dedication to service extended beyond his profession. He was an active member of the Quincy Jaycees, earning the SparkPlug Award in 1974 and later serving as the organization's president. He volunteered as a Cub Scout leader, Methodist Youth Fellowship sponsor, and participated in a mission trip to Haiti, where he helped build housing through the United Methodist Church.

Travel was one of Dave's greatest joys. Over the years, he visited more than 30 countries, including Australia, Norway, Malta, Jamaica, Chile, and Peru-where he was named an honorary Peruvian by his partner Mary's family. He also loved traveling across the United States and Canada with family, skiing, hiking, playing tennis, and taking long walks with his beloved dog, Millie.

An engaged member of the Windsor Hills community in Normal, Illinois, Dave served for many years on the Homeowners Association Board, including a term as president. He took great pride in helping to establish the community's garden space, which continues to thrive as a sanctuary for butterflies and neighbors alike.

Dave's storytelling was legendary. He often began with, "I don't know if I've told you this before…"-and even if he had, no one minded hearing it again. His humor, kindness, and steady presence left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernie and Ruth Scarbrough; his brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Joanne Scarbrough; his uncle and aunt, Virgil and Lula Scarbrough; his uncle and aunt, Russell and Mabel Vollbracht; his great-uncle and great-aunt, Bob and Leoda Vollmer; and his cousin, Kent Vollbracht.

He is survived by his life partner, Mary Shultz; his daughters, Andrea Scarbrough and Stephanie Rollen (Scott); his grandchildren, Justin Rollen (fiancée Kate Jasper) and Audrey Rollen (fiancée Danni Wilcox); his niece and nephew, Jill and Mark Scarbrough; his cousin, Steve Vollmer; and his grand-niece and grand-nephew, Denise Vollbracht Wiewel and Terry Vollbracht. He also leaves behind his faithful dog Millie, a kitchen full of recipes he loved to improvise, a thriving herb garden, and shelves of well-loved books.

A Celebration of Life Open House and Memorial will be held at his home in Normal, Ill., from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026. (Please e-mail [email protected] for the address).

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. To express condolences online, please visit www.eastlawn-bloomington.com.
