Kathryn Thompson Obituary

Kathryn A. "Kay" Thompson

March 29, 1929 - June 12, 2025

ATLANTA - Kathryn A. "Kay" Thompson, 96, of Atlanta, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at Goldwater Care in Bloomington.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Eminence Christian Church in rural Atlanta with Pastor Henry Johnson officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Eminence Christian Church. Burial will follow the service at the Atlanta Cemetery in Atlanta.

Kathryn A. Carson was born in Urbana on March 29, 1929, the daughter of J. Kemp and Davena MacKay Carson. She was united in marriage to Robert J. "Bob" Thompson on September 6, 1952, at The Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. He preceded her in death on January 15, 2014.

She is survived by two sons, Doug (La Verne) Thompson and Brian (Karen) Thompson; one daughter-in-law, Adriana Thompson; six grandchildren, Janelle (Brett) Hermann, Nathan (Nicki) Thompson, Adam (Patri) Thompson, Jason (Sharon) Hogan, Michelle (Andy) Baragona, and Kelsey Thompson; seven great-grandchildren, Quinn, Beau, Reese, Nolan, Meredith, Winnie, and Mark; and two brothers, John M. (Joanne) Carson and James W. (Marlene) Carson. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one son, Mark A. Thompson.

Kay graduated from the Paxton High School in 1947. She then graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1951 and the following year she taught second grade in Delavan. After marriage, Kay moved to rural Atlanta and became an active farm wife and mother. She returned to teaching as a substitute teacher in the Olympia School District #16 for 30 years, retiring in 1996. Kay loved serving her Lord and playing the piano and organ at the Eminence Christian Church for 50 years. She was also an active member of the Ladies Cemetery Association of Atlanta and Eminence Ladies Aide. Her devotion to family was grounded in a history of summer gatherings at Lake Okoboji, Iowa. Kay had a passion for genealogy and researched generations of family lineage of the Carson, MacKay, Thompson, and Crihfield families. This passion led her to meet family she had never known.

Memorials may made to the Eminence Christian Church.
