BLOOMINGTON - Leslie W. Alexander, 87, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, IL.
He was born on August 15, 1936, in Newkirk, OK to Tiney Edward and Sarah Effie Alexander as the fifth of eight children, moving to Arkansas City, KS, as a young boy.
Leslie graduated from Arkansas City High School, Cowley County Community College with an Associate degree, and Pittsburg State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Education. He married his sweetheart, Wilma Jean Heavin, on December 20, 1958, in Baxter Springs, KS. They celebrated 64 years of marriage and together they raised their precious daughter, Glenella.
He taught at numerous schools: Pineville, MO; Netawaka, KS; Hillsboro, MO; Redrock, OK; and Haysville, KS, before settling at Bloomington High School Area Vocational Center for 23 years to finish his teaching career. As an industrial arts teacher, he taught everything from woods to electronics, driver's education, drafting, printing, welding, and even was head golf coach and an acting superintendent. He learned computer technology so he could assist Wilma Jean with her teaching projects. A born leader, he was president of the Illinois Vocational Association and the Illinois Industrial Education Association.
Leslie was well known as a master woodworking craftsman, cabinet and furniture maker. He designed most of his pieces, including the "Alexander" model Monaco motorhome. He built and self-contracted three homes for his family. Raised in a Pentecostal church, his faith in God remained an integral basis for his life as he lived and loved. He always found time to serve his local church on the board and as Treasurer.
After retiring in 1991, Leslie and Wilma Jean traveled full-time in a motorhome for 23 years, exploring all 50 states, as well as Canada and Newfoundland. During this stage of life, he continued leadership as president of Monaco International and Elk International, two of the largest chapters of the Family Motorcoach Association. Leslie stayed busy volunteering at the motorhome rallies they attended across the country.
He valued friendships and helping his neighbors. Leslie's hobbies including many things, such as collecting classic cars, four wheeling, geocaching, cruises, and playing games and cards. He loved to think and dream about how to do things better.
Leslie will be missed by many. He is survived by his loving wife, Wilma Jean Alexander; daughter, Glenella Alexander; brother, Norm Alexander (Glenna); and sister-in-law, Tonya Alexander. Leslie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Edward Ray Alexander, Merla (Red) Alexander, John Ralph Alexander; sisters: Leona Bell, Leta Morgan, and Ruth Hoepfinger.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 9, 2023, at the First Assembly of God Church, 800 E Vernon Ave, Normal, IL. His visitation will be held prior at 10:00 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chi Alpha First Assembly of God Church.

My Deepest Condolences to the Alexander family. Not only was Leslie a great teacher but even greater friend. He and another teacher helped me to get started in my teaching career. Not only was he a great friend to me and my family but to the whole Martinez family. May God keep the whole Alexander family in his comforting loving arms. We will continue to keep your family in our prayers.
