Marlene Pierce Gregor, a vibrant force of creativity, community spirit, and lifelong dedication to education and the arts, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, in Bloomington, Ill. Born to Kenneth and Dorothy Pierce, Marlene carried forward a legacy of passion and purpose that shaped not only her family but also the very heart of the communities she touched.
A beloved mother of three-Gregg Timmons and Todd Timmons (both of Texas), and Wendy McGuire (Normal). Marlene had two step-children- Katherine Gregor (California) and Matissa Gregor (Texas). She was also a proud grandmother and great-grandmother to 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Marlene's family was her joy and inspiration.
She was preceded in death by her devoted parents; her spouse and well-known artist, Harold L. Gregor, and sister, Priscilla (Pat) Petersen. Marlene was previously married to G. Ray Timmons and Norman Rittenhouse.
Marlene attended Oak Park-River Forest High School, and enhanced her education with a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Illinois and an M.S. from Illinois State University. Her passion for science and teaching earned her prestigious honors as she nurtured classrooms in Kewanee and Fairbury. She was named one of Illinois' 30 Outstanding Elementary Science Teachers and achieved multiple awards recognizing her innovative contributions to education. She transitioned from her teaching career to one of the arts when she married Harold Gregor, and as a loving couple they left an lasting impact through their talents as they traveled the world. She also became an artist in her own right.
Marlene's civic leadership was as dynamic as her personality. She was a tireless advocate for downtown Bloomington's revitalization, spearheading public art projects including "Corn on the Curb" and championing community beautification efforts. Her dedication earned her accolades such as the YMCA Women of Distinction and Patron of the Year at the McLean County Art Center. She also served on the Illinois Symphony Orchestra Guild for a number of years. She was also involved in many organizations.
Beyond her public achievements, Marlene was known for her storytelling charm, infectious enthusiasm for life, artistic talent and a competitive spirit at bridge and mahjong tables. Her laughter and zest left a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She was generous and an inspiration to many.
She will be laid to rest on March 21, 2026. A viewing will be held at 10 a.m. at The Second Presbyterian Church in downtown Bloomington, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m., then burial at Funk's Grove, in Shirley, Ill., with lunch at the church after. Friends and family are invited to celebrate her life at an open house on Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Bloomington Country Club, just days after what would have been her 94th birthday.
Marlene Pierce Gregor leaves behind a legacy of creativity, community vision, and a reminder that life is best lived with passion, purpose, and with a paint brush in hand. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered as a true pillar of heart and humor in her community.
