Philip Mitchell Obituary

Philip Wayne Mitchell

October 7, 1957 - November 9, 2025

Philip Wayne Mitchell age 68 of Normal IL, passed away at 5:35 PM on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at his residence. Visitation will be 4:00 PM-7:00 PM Friday, November 14, 2025, at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, IL His funeral service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Christ Church PCA 1301 N. Linden St. Normal, IL. Pastor Bob Smart will be officiating. Burial will be at East Lawn Cemetery, Bloomington, IL. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to Tunnel To Towers Foundation.

Phil was born October 7, 1957, in Olney, IL to Carl and Carrie Simms Mitchell. He married Katrina Shockey on August 12, 1982, in Bloomington, IL. She survives.

Also surviving three children: Molly (Spencer) Thomas, Green Bay, WI, twins Noah Mitchell, Georgetown, TX, Caleb (Janet) Mitchell, Carlock, IL; five grandchildren: Elizabeth, Rea, William, Amos, Selah; one brother, Steve (Linda) Mitchell, LaPlata, MD; one sister, Diane (Dan) Anderson, Milford, IL.

Phil is preceded by parents.

Phil attended the University of Illinois for his undergraduate studies, graduating in 1979. After completing his undergraduate studies, he enrolled in medical school, graduating from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago in 1983. After medical school, he completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Northwestern University in 1987.

He was an Emergency Room (ER) Physician, where he was board certified in both Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. While Phil worked at a variety of hospitals in his more than 30 years of practicing medicine, he spent the majority of his career working in the ER at BroMenn Hospital. He was also particularly proud of the several years that he spent working as a physician at a local VA clinic, where he cherished being able to have veterans as his patients and building relationships with them.

To know Phil was to know laughter, as he was known for his great sense of humor, quick wit, and ability to make a joke in almost any situation. Phil never knew a stranger, always treating everyone with curiosity and making a point to speak with, and to be genuinely interested in those he interacted with on a daily basis, whether that be his patients he treated or the waiter that served him his dinner. Phil was also a lifelong learner, spending much of his free time reading medical journals, books of theology and philosophy, and fantasy/science fiction novels.

Phil loved his family and greatly looked forward to the annual summer vacations that he took along with his brother and sister's family. He particularly enjoyed spending time playing with his grandchildren, where he was well loved and known for the creative games that he made, the interesting stories that he told, and the funny jokes that he teased them with.

Phil was a Christian who placed his ultimate faith and salvation solely in the work of Jesus Christ. He and his wife, Katrina, attended Christ Church PCA, where they were both members for almost 30 years. Phil took great comfort in the belief that despite the sufferings and crookedness that exist in the world, that things will not always be this way, and that one day Christ will return to set all things right and undo all things that ought not to be.

Yesterday

I had the honor of working with this gentle, knowledgeable, kind physician at Eureka ER. He
certainly set a standard that was respected and recognized. We all loved working with him. I certainly missed his sly humor and smile once he wasn't in Eureka's rotation and thought of him often.
May the angels welcome him and guide him to his Saviour.
