Susan Barkmeier Obituary

Susan Kay (Comte) Barkmeier, age 77, of Heyworth, Illinois, passed away at 3:54 p.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington.

A Celebration of Life and private family burial will be held at a later date.

Sue was born on October 23, 1947, in Bloomington, Illinois, the daughter of Marcel Comte and Ellen (Wolf) Comte. She married Stephen Barkmeier on May 30, 1987, and they recently celebrated 38 years of marriage.

Sue is survived by her husband, Steve, and her three sons: Bryan Heitz of Heyworth, Brad Heitz of Celina, Texas, and Jason Heitz of Normal. She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Erin Kundell of Portland, Oregon, and her stepson, Casey Barkmeier. Sue's legacy continues through her grandchildren: Amber Heitz, Braden Heitz, Alexandria Heitz, Bentley Heitz, Jade Barkmeier, Adeline Barkmeier, and Bernadette Sue Kundell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Timothy Comte and Marcel "Mac" Comte; and her sisters, Barbara Fleesen and Pamela Comte.

Sue graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Bloomington in 1965. She later attended Patricia Stevens College, Sinclair Community College, and Illinois State University. She became a beautician and then her career included roles in real estate, accounting, and office management. She worked for her father, who founded Mr. Quick Hamburgers in Moline, Illinois, in 1965.

For 19 years, Sue served as the Office Manager at Contractor's Disposal, Inc., where she was proud to work for her youngest son, Jason. She was instrumental in laying the foundation and supporting the growth of the company.

Sue had a lifelong love of animals, especially horses and her many beloved pets. She was also an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan and rarely missed watching a game. She was beautiful, smart, and had a contagious smile and laugh. She was the greatest mom anyone could ever have and will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sterile Feral Foundation of Central Illinois, McLean County Animal Services, OSF Peace Meal, or the organization of your choice, in Sue's memory.
