Francis Scully Obituary
Francis (Bud) Joseph Scully Jr February 14, 1928 - May 2, 2022 Bud Scully passed away on May 2, after a brief illness. He was 94 years young. He was a longtime resident of Pasadena, having moved there when he was 14, with his parents and four older sisters, all deceased, from Portland, Oregon. Bud worked in the Insurance business, first for others, then establishing Financial Guaranty Insurance Brokers in Pasadena, where he worked with his son, Joe Scully, until his retirement at age 91, in 2019. He loved his work and often remarked in the last few years that he wished he still had a job. Bud had a rich social life and was a dear friend to many. He had a great sense of humor, laughed with relish, appreciated a strong handshake and loved a good story. He also liked to write and receive letters. Bud always showed up looking his best. He believed a beautiful suit and tie, pocket square and well-shined shoes were the foundation of any worthwhile occasion. Bud was an avid history buff and read many books about American and European history. He especially loved Winston Churchill and Teddy Roosevelt and had plenty of knowledge to share. He was a devout member of the Catholic Church where his lifelong faith in God kept him buoyant even in the darkest times. Bud struggled with alcohol in his life and found peace and sobriety in AA. He was a devoted member and remained sober for over 45 years. It was here that he found his greatest inspiration and purpose. He helped many people worldwide find and maintain sobriety through the sharing of his story. He is survived by his 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Joe Scully (Gigi Underwood), Francis and Sidney Scully; Liza Scully, Roy and Lucy Stafford; and Anne Scully. He is also survived by his ex-wife Dorothy Scully, several nieces and nephews, and his longtime friend and companion, Mimi Martin. A special thank you to Rick Underwood, his caregiver, companion and friend. Funeral services will be held at 10AM, June 2, 2022 at St. Andrew's Church, 140 Chestnut St., Pasadena, CA 91101. A rosary will be held prior at 9.30 in the church and a reception will follow. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to: Alcoholics Anonymous 4311 Wilshire Blvd Suite 104 LA, CA 90010 or St Andrew's Church Building Fund or Endowment
