Randall Slade Obituary

Dec. 13, 1942 - Oct. 9, 2022 Son; Brother; Randy; Colonel; Professor Slade; Dad; Pops; Friend It didn't really matter how you knew him or the name you called him by -- you could call him a friend. Randall Elliott Slade passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, on October 9, 2022, at home in Pasadena, Calif. Randy was born on this date, Dec. 13, in 1942, in Washington, D.C. He grew up in Rhode Island and New York state and moved to California as a U.S. Army veteran in 1978. He started a rock'n'roll band while in high school and performed along the East Coast and in Europe while serving in the U.S. Army. Some of his fondest memories were of times performing with The Exiles (humorous as he became quite the "straight edge") and sharing his love of music. Randy earned an MBA in management science from the University of Rhode Island and a Master of Military Science (honors) from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1983. Randy would probably describe his life in segments defined by his careers. He served in the U.S. Army as an Airborne Ranger, as an intelligence emissary with the 6th Infantry Division; and in the Berlin Brigade, where he was distinguished as a Combat Arms Officer. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Reserves, proudly having dedicated a combined 40 years of service to his country. Patriotic to the core, he would most assuredly say that his time serving and then teaching at the Army Officer Advanced Course and the Command and General Staff Colleges were some of his most gratifying experiences. He continued a life of service as a bank vice president and, especially, in his final career, as a college professor. Randy always dressed the part well, and every suit jacket he owned and wore proudly displayed an American flag pin on the lapel. Devoting time to the Business and Veterans clubs and chairing the business department at Mt. Sierra College, Randy reached countless young people through his companionship and mentoring. Randall never really did retire; he volunteered on the Internal Medical Review Board of Cedars-Sanai Hospital right up to the time of his passing. As a lifelong learner, Randy was passionate about reading, music, history and politics. He loved conversing with friends, old or new, over a good cup of coffee and a cigar. No matter the subject, Randy was an insightful, thoughtful, inquisitive conversationalist. Randall was greeted in eternal rest by his beloved parents, Harriett S. Slade and George G. Slade Sr., stepson Matthew Davis, and certainly by a few furry friends eagerly wagging their tails. He leaves many dear ones behind, including his East Coast siblings, Salley Mansour of West Warwick, RI, and George Slade of Bourne, MA, and his California family, Emily Marsh of Pasadena, Jonathan McHenry of Pasadena and Vincent McHenry of Idaho. Services will be private. These are the words chosen by his friends as they would describe him: Elegant, Wise, Charismatic, Selfless, Supportive, Interesting, Patriotic, Passionate, Special and Friend Gone too soon, the world lost a good one with you. Goodbye, my Friend.

I am so grateful to have known Mr. Slade. I was very fond of his cooky humor, charm, and endless knowledge. I recall his telling of the Berlin Wall-he became emotional expressing that time when people had truly stood united for freedom. It was a passionate and vulnerable side I got to see as a patriot that made me cherish him as a human. I regret not having the opportunity to have spent more time with him... I am really going to miss him.
