Henry Cox Obituary

September 10, 1938 - October 17, 2021 Henry Charles "Chuck" Cox, II, dedicated father, brother and loving grandfather, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Indian Hills on October 17, 2021. He was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in Long Beach, California surrounded by a loving extended family, and graduated from Jordan High School in 1956. By 1960, he had a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California. He served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve from 1961 to 1968 and received an honorable discharge. He married the love of his life, Jacqueline "Jackie" N. Hopkins Cox in 1961. In 1970, Chuck was looking in the Inland Empire for land to build housing developments. Chuck discovered that Robert O. "Bob" Hunter was interested in selling Jurupa Hills Country Club as well as land parcels in the Jurupa Hills area. Negotiations began, and in one month's time Chuck became the proud owner of Jurupa Hills Country Club and many land parcels. In 1971, Chuck and his long-time business partner, John West, moved their families to the Jurupa Valley and formed a partnership to begin construction on the Jurupa Hills Country Club Villas subdivision. Through the years of their partnership, Chuck and John together built and planned for approximately 800 homes in Western Riverside County. Together they also purchased and operated Indian Hills Golf Club, operated the Van Buren Golf Center, along with a variety of other businesses. Their successful partnership lasted until John's death in 2017. Through the years it became clear that Chuck was not only good at building homes, but also at creating unique ways to develop the land that he and his business partners owned. Eddie Fischer and Ralph Nielson worked along Chuck and John to build and manage the De Anza Shopping Center while long-time friend Neil Hatcher, worked with Chuck and others in the formation of De Anza National Bank. He also constructed, owned, and operated, along with partners John, Eddie, and the late Don Galleano, Hidden Valley Golf Club in Norco. Chuck also realized the need of senior housing in the Jurupa Valley and built the Villa De Anza Retirement Assisted Living Center. For over 40 years, Chuck supported and donated to a wide variety of causes and organizations and proudly served on the Selective Service System Board for the United States Government, for fifteen years. He dearly loved the United States of America and the opportunity it has provided him, his family, and friends, carrying a copy of the United States Constitution in his wallet. Chuck was a serious USC Football booster. He, along with family and friends have attended all home games over the years, as well as many away gamesespecially Notre Dame. He also enjoyed the Los Angeles Rams games with friends, tailgate parties and all. He played golf weekly and enjoyed traveling with his family. As the patriarch of the Cox Clan, he is dearly loved by his family and will be forever missed. Chuck was preceded in death by Jackie, his devoted wife of 49 years, his father Henry Charles Cox, I , his mother Lawona Victoria Lewis, and his sister Susan Williams, from Hot Springs, Arkansas. He is survived by his sister Nancy Castro from Las Vegas, Nevada, his daughter Karen Cox Vlahos and her husband Scott, his son Henry Charles "Charlie" Cox, III and his partner Breann Bertino, his cherished grandchildren Brandon Vlahos and his wife Sloan, Aubree Vlahos Tarry and her husband Noah, Henry Charles "Hank" Cox, IV, Corbin Cox and a first great grandchild to be born soon to the Tarry's. The date of the celebration of life is December 16, 2021. One can arrive at 12:30 p.m. with the service beginning promptly at 1:30 p.m. at Jurupa Hills Country Club, 6161 Moraga Avenue, Jurupa Valley, California 92509. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations, in the name of Henry Charles "Chuck" Cox, II, to the City of Hope on their website: www.cityofhope.org/donate or mail donations to 1500 Duarte Road, Duarte, CA 91010. For the short amount of time I worked with Mr C, it was a pleasure. He had soo many stories to tell, things he taught and many laughs shared. He will be missed. Condolences to Charlie and Karen, family and friends.

Mr. C, as many of his staff called him, was a wonderful person to work for. He made us feel at home while in his employment. Virginia Huerta and myself took care of Jackie in her last few months of her life and we also took care of Mr. C as he recovered from surgery. It was an honor to care for them both. We miss them both.

My heart goes out to all the family. We lost a great man of class with a wonderful heart. He always greeted you with a warm smile even if he had to give you 5 strokes a side in Golf! HA... We will miss you Chuck.
