Richard R. Smith

Richard R. Smith died May 14, 2022 after a short, but severe decline. He was 82 and was known by many friends and relatives as "Dick" or "Smitty." He is survived by his wife, Judy, two daughters, Shelly Wickwire and Amy Robinson, a son, Richard Bryan Smith, a foster son, Jeff Lambropoulos, a sister, Lorna Bell, a brother, Michael T. Smith, eight grandchildren, in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews. Richard had a sense of humor, and was friendly, independent, always welcoming a challenge or adventure. In 1966 after struggling through college in Wyoming, Richard moved his family from Wyoming to Moreno Valley, CA for his first teaching job (33 years as a teacher in Moreno Valley). He skillfully navigated CA freeways to make sure his family enjoyed many CA attractions. He invented three electronic devices to enrich learning for all students. He bought and remodeled a house, making enough on the resale to purchase land and design and own a beautiful custom home. He joined a local Elks Lodge and served as Exalted Ruler. After retiring from teaching, he launched a successful vending business. He created lovely fruit and vegetable gardens. He painted, danced and learned to sail. He loved music and had a fine singing voice, sometimes playing a ukulele or guitar. When his wife, Judy, lost her brother and mother within three days of each other, Richard, without hesitation, transplanted the beloved roses, nurtured by Judy's mother, from her house to his home. He cared for and supported Judy, every day, for many months, by getting her up, dressed, and outside to walk many miles with their two St. Bernards. These were selfless and beautiful acts of kindness, and for this, and his many other accomplishments, Richard/Dick/Smitty will never be forgotten.
