Henry Thomas Obituary
It is with profound sorrow we announce the passing of Mr. Henry Thomas, 96 of Washington, DC formerly of Florence who transitioned on Saturday, June 14, 2025.
Mr. Henry "NINNIE" Allen Thomas, Sr., son of the late Jefferson "Jeff" and Elizabeth "Lizzy" Moses Thomas, was born on September 18, 1928, in Florence, South Carolina.
He received his early education in the public schools of Florence County and graduated from Wilson High School in the Class of 1949. While at Wilson, he served as captain of the football team, assistant manager of the basketball team, and was an active member of the Dramatic Club, Safety Patrol, Choral Club, and Student Council. Following graduation, Henry proudly enlisted in the United States Army.
In 1952, Henry was united in holy matrimony to Isla Louise Stevenson. This loving union was blessed with four children. The couple made their home in Washington, D.C., and later returned to Florence, South Carolina, in 2000 after retirement.
Henry was employed and later retired from Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Maryland, Prince George's County. He also worked at Sterling Laundry and was a part-owner of the Twilight Delicatessen, where he served for many years.
Upon returning to Florence, he reunited with Trinity Baptist Church. Henry enjoyed football-especially cheering for the Washington Redskins-cooking, grilling, and building things around his yard. He also loved traveling and reconnecting with his classmates from the Wilson High Class of 1949, the proud Wilson Tigers.
In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Isla Thomas; his brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and sisters-in-law.
He leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Myron Eric Thomas (Neverseena O. Thomas) of Blythewood, South Carolina, and Henry Allen "Tony" Thomas, Jr. of Pahoa, Hawaii; daughters, Janet Yvonne "Von" Thomas, Lena Thomas King, and Jacquelyn "Jackie" Walker, all of Washington, D.C.; sisters-in-law, Janice S. Hawkins and Mary Louise Stevenson, both of Florence, South Carolina. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Anthony Thomas, Jamari Jackson, Clyde "Jonathan" King, Christian King, Lena "Little Lena" King, and Christopher King, all of Washington, D.C.; Redahlia Person, Quaran Person, and Isla Person of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Breanna Owens of Columbia, South Carolina. He is also lovingly remembered by his great-grandchildren: Anthony "Lil Dee," Makaila, Israel "Trey," and Elijah Thomas of Bowie, Maryland; Jonathan, Jaleah, Joelle, Callie, and Janylah King; Nasir, Qaseem, John, Zhane, Zhalena, Joziah, Jahleel, Julian, Jakhai, and Zymir King, all of Silver Spring, Maryland; and Zaylei King of Columbia, South Carolina. His two great-great-grandsons, Ahsime and Ahmire Milner of Silver Spring, Maryland, and his honorary grandson, Anthony Fortune of Florence, South Carolina, will also carry his memory forward. He is further survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
