Eric Kovatch Obituary

Eric Ronald Kovatch, 66, of Port Angeles, Washington, left us peacefully on May 16, 2025, at a fishing lodge in Inchelium, WA. A beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, Eric will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering love. Known for his stubborn streak, he endeavored to protect and provide for those around him, whether family, friends, or the community he served.

Born on August 2, 1958, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Eric was the son of the late Paul Herman Kovatch and Bonnie Lou Kovatch (Thompson). At the age of 15, he moved to Port Townsend, Washington, with his family, where he graduated from Port Townsend High School in 1976 - Go Redskins!

Eric continued his journey of service by enlisting in the United States Navy in September 1976, where he served his country for four proud years. Following his military service, Eric pursued his dream of becoming a police officer. In the early '80s, he was accepted into the Washington State Police Academy and later served with dedication at the Auburn Police Department. It was during this time that Eric met Debbie, the love of his life. They married on December 11, 1982, and shared a devoted partnership lasting 42 years. Together they lovingly raised two children, Leta Nichole Westfall "Nikki" and Eric Robert Kovatch. Eric's law enforcement journey culminated as he retired as a Sergeant from the Port Angeles Police Department in 2012. His career brought him immense fulfillment, but his greatest pride was reserved for his family.

Eric had cherished memories. An avid fisherman, Eric was particularly proud of one notable achievement – catching a 65 lb king salmon off of Noyes Island in Alaska on June 25, 2000. He relished every opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren Bryson, Emmalyn, Nolan, Bristol, Charlotte, and Lucy, showering them with warmth, love, and boundless pride. Eric's legacy is deeply rooted in love and family. A member of the Port Angeles Golf Club, Eric indulged in his passions for fishing and golfing, frequently sharing these experiences with those he held dear. His generosity also extended to community activities, where he touched many lives with his warm spirit.

Eric is survived by his wife Debra Jean Kovatch, son Eric Robert Kovatch and his wife Brandi, daughter Leta Nichole Westfall "Nikki" and her husband Theron, brother Kenneth Thompson Kovatch and his wife Joni, and his six cherished grandchildren. He joins his father, Paul, and mother Bonnie in eternal peace. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Naval Elks lodge (131 E 1st street. Port Angeles, WA) on June 14th 2025 from 2pm-5pm where family and friends will come together to honor Eric's remarkable life and profound impact he had on all who knew him. His family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, acts of kindness and community service be performed in his honor, reflecting the values Eric cherished most.

Debbie and family, I am heartbroken when I heard of Eric's passing. I was in shock. I first met Eric and his family when they moved to Port Townsend. We became the best of friends and Paul and Bonnie took me in as family. I spent a lot of time with all. So many memories. I considered Eric as a brother to me. He was kind, caring, funny and dedicated to those he loved. I will miss him. I can only imagine your pain losing Eric. I know his classmates are also struggling with this too. My heart goes out to you. Much love, Jeanie
