Millicent Maravich

Millicent Maravich, died October at the age of 84. She was the daughter of George Maravich and Mary Kosanovich Maravich of Harrisburg. A graduate of Central Dauphin High School and Shippensburg State Teachers College, she taught English and Social Studies at Lower Dauphin High School in 1963, before going to work as a civilian employee of the United States Navy.
Millicent retired from the Navy in 1995 as Director of Training and Command Training Advocate at the former Ships Parts Control Center (SPCC) in Mechanicsburg, which capped a 32-year career in Navy Logistics both in Mechanicsburg and Washington, D.C. During her career she designed a training program which raised computer literacy by 50 percent at SPCC and received numerous citations for her advocacy for the implementation of Equal Employment Opportunity efforts.
In 1991 she was honored with several other women at a National Women's History Month luncheon in Harrisburg. In her remarks she noted that as a civilian employee of the Navy she spent much of her professional life working on "Macho Mountain" with men who didn't understand why there was a Women's History Month. She went on to say, "I've worked for men who made Dirty Harry look like Pee Wee Herman."
In her retirement, she became certified as an English as a Second Language instructor and took joy in conversing in English with her many immigrant students. She was a life-long reader and life-long learner. Her library of more than 1000 volumes was donated to the Keystone State Challenge Academy at Fort Indiantown Gap.
She was pre-deceased by her parents and brother Stevan and is survived by her sister Martha Maravich Cologie and brother-in-law Bill Cologie. A private memorial service is being arranged. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, Inc.
