Rev. James Clark Howard Jr." Coach Jake Howard"

1923-2013

Reverend James Clark (Coach) Howard Jr. was born in Pensacola, Florida to the late James Clark, Sr and Mary Louise Howard.

On Saturday, July 27, 2013, the Lord in His infinite wisdom, commissioned the angels to escort our beloved Husband, Father, Relative and Friend into His presence.

Coach Howard graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1942. He attended Bethune Cookman College. Coach Howard met his loving wife, Gloria Steen, while attending college.

Coach Howard was a beloved Physical Education Teacher and Assistant Coach at Washington High School. He was transferred to Pensacola High School where he was the first African American Coach and later Guidance Counselor.

Reverend Howard entered into ministry and served the Lord with much fervor. He pastored several churches in the AME Zion denomination.

Survivors include his loving, devoted wife, Gloria Steen Howard, children, Ronald Howard (Mary), Bishop James Cecil Howard, Sr (Clydie), Cherlyn Howard Minor, James C Howard, III, (Saundra), Darrell Howard, Sr (Helen), Mollette Howard Bennett (Alphanso) and other relatives.

Celebration of Life will be Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 6pm at Joe Morris Funeral Home. Homegoing Services will be held Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 12pm at Houser Memorial AME Zion Church. Burial will be in Barrancas National Cemetery.

Gloria and Family, it is with deep sympathy of your loss. Please know that we share in your great loss and pray that God will continue to shower his blessing on you all. Coach Howard was one of a kind and I can say they have not had a real coach in the school system like him since his retirement.God is the Almighty and he knows the hour and the second as to when he will pick that beautiful flower to enhance his garden, but at least we know he is walking around heaven with many of his old friends and some of his students. Oh what a rejoicing it will be. Gloria, you and the entire family will be held in our hearts and prayers. This is a great loss to all of us that knew him as family,Coach and friend. I am sadden to learn of the death of Rev. Howard. He was a class mate of my sister Bessie and was the Eulogist at her funeral in 1991. "Jake" served so many in so many ways for so many years. He will be missed. To his family and friends, God's grace is sufficient to comfort in time of grief and it is available to all who seek it.

I remember Coach Howard when he was a Guidance Counselor at Pensacola High. As a young freshman he made me feel right at home and I enjoyed the stories of his football days at Bethune Cookman. Rest in Peace Coach Howard.
