James Mowrey Obituary

JAMES WILLAM MOWREY
1929-2007

James Willam Mowrey died January 22, 2007, at age 77.
Mr. Mowrey was born to James Hammack and Ellen McSweeney in the Westside of Chicago, IL, March 31, 1929, into a family that included his sister, Ellen Rago. He attended St. Mel's and Resurrection grammar schools, St. Mary's Orphanage Academy, and St. Mel's High School.
Mr. Mowrey enlisted in the Navy in 1944. He served in WWII in the American campaign, Philippine Liberation, Asiatic Pacific Post-WWII occupation, China Service, United Nations, and the Korean War assigned with the Marines. He mainly served as a land, aviation and sea photographer as well as a combat cameraman. He learned motion photography and served under director, John Ford. Specifically among his many assignments on both the East and West coasts, he spent time with the Combat Camera Group on Coronado Island, San Diego, CA, and on the USS Little Rock missile cruiser, 1960-61. He became a photography instructor at NAS Pensacola.
He retired from active military duty with honorable discharge in 1967. He then served as photographer for public affairs, NAS Pensacola, and then photo-journalist at the Gosport. He remained with the Civil Service until final retirement. He worked two, and sometimes three, jobs to support a family of eight. He once even opened a restaurant and hired a cook who made square pancakes. We love you Dad and will never forget all you did!
Mr. Mowrey leaves behind his spouse, Dolores Mowrey; sons, James V. and John S. Mowrey; daughters, Ellen Edwards, Valerie Chavis, Cathy Shuber and Bonnie Mowrey; in-laws, Andy, Gary, Bobby, Jim, Dan, Michelle and Pam; grandchildren, Tarah, Jackie, Ray, Jennifer, Sarah, Megan, Rachael, Riley and Bobbie Jo, Drew, and Hayden; great-grandchildren, Keaton, Connor and Trista, Julia and Blake; and numerous friends in and out of Pensacola, especially his "club" friends.
Due to the fact he donated his body to medical science, Memorial Mass services will be Friday, February 9, 2007 at 7 p.m. at St. Anne's Church, Saufley Field Rd. Be there or be square.

Dolores - My sincerest condolences. Even though we lost contact, I've thought of Jim many times in past years as I remembered working with him in CCG and our voyage to Point Barrow, Alaska to photograph the DEW-Line. May Jim rest in peace. He will always be one of the most unforgettable friends I've known.

how do you say goodbye to someone who you loved. I had the honor of being included as a friend to Jim.That is something that I will always hold dear to me. I never heard him say a bad word about anyone, and didn't hear him complain about the hand he was dealt. I will miss him and can hear him talking to GOD right now saying "That remines me of ......." may GOD bless you always..Bob Baillie

I worked with Jim for a number of years at NARFE and NADEP. He was a kind, generous, good hearted gentleman. The world needs more Jim Mowerys.
