Robert Quarles Obituary

Robert Logan Quarles of Pensacola, Florida, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 6, 2010. Bob was born in Port St. Joe, Florida on October 10, 1969, to William Shelton Quarles, Jr. and Jacquelyn Kenney Quarles. He was a 1987 graduate of Port St. Joe High School. Bob served in the United States Navy, 1987-1989 and attended the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida, where he earned a degree in Marine Biology. He was currently employed by EPA where he had worked since 1993. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William S. Quarles, Sr., Fannie Smith Quarles, Basil E. Kenney, Jr. and Sarah Logan Kenney, and is survived by a brother, William S. "Biff" Quarles, III (Carol) of Tallahassee, Florida, and two sisters Susan Quarles Harmon (Craig) of Richmond, Virginia, Anne Smith Quarles of Hillsborough, N.C., and a brother in heart and spirit, Edward Wood, Jr. He is also survived by two children Ashley Meaghan Quarles and Benjamin Fisher Quarles, many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
Bob will always be remembered through all of the lives he touched and for all of the people he brought together. To some he was a surfer, tall, blonde, and tan. To others, a fishing guide, push pole in hand. To others he was a boat Captain, a research diver, a colleague, a friend. To some he was a brother, steadfast and true, to some a child who loved his parents deeply too. To a few he was father, daddy, and dad. He often said his love for these was the greatest treasure he had. He was an uncle, a cousin, a nephew indeed, a neighbor to all and a stranger to none. But most importantly he was known to our Heavenly Father as son. He was made of laughter, sunshine, strength, and adventure the best friend many of us may ever remember.
According to Bob's wishes his ashes will be cast into Port St Joe Bay.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, December 10, at 3:00 pm at The Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, 75 Fairpoint Drive in Gulf Breeze, FL, with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, would be greatly appreciated for whom our family will be eternally grateful for their unconditional love and support in our time of loss.
HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.

You taught me unconditional love, Bob. I will forever be grateful for the time we had together and the things I learned from you. Through all of the good and hard times, my love never waivered, I hope it brought you some joy in the time we had together. I will see you again, “shiny soul”. Until then, please watch over all of us left behind, especially your children. I love you. “For a moment you held in your hand, brilliant as a star, fragile as a flower, a piece of my heart”.

I met Bob through a college friend and fellow EPA diver when they were passing through Miami on a dive trip aboard the BOLD. His enthusiasm, his big smile and his love for his children are what will stay with me in my memory of him. What a tremendous loss.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends; may they all find peace.

Bob was one of the many friends and colleagues I met through the EPA scientific diving program. I have met hundreds of people but few were as genuine and positive as Bob. Always willing to lend a hand and help and always with a smile on his face. My trips to Gulf Breeze will be a little less happy without seeing Bob.

Fly fishing trips with Capt. Bob were the highlight of my visits to Florida. He was a joy to be with and gave me many memories that will last a lifetime. He will be missed. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Rest in peace Capn.Bob. Condolences to the family and all of your many friends. Thanks for the memories we made on our two fishing trips with my family. You have hooked us on inshore light tackle fishing. We will miss you and your great personality forever. Save me one more trip to catch that barracuda that got away when I someday join you on the Great Water in the sky. Goodbye my friend.

I am currently in Okinawa, Japan and just got the tragic news. Bob and I met when our boats crossed paths some 14 years ago. Bob never met a stranger and his radiant personality always shown through. I will miss my friend and fishing buddy. God bless the Quarles family in their time of loss.

Bob, boat, "Boo" and Ben were common sites on our street. He had a bright smile, a cheery wave or a honk for every neighbor he passed as he towed his boat to or from fishing. He always made you smile when you were around him. His love of the water and fishing were addictive. I truly regret that his invitation to go fishing never came to fruition. One always got a gift from being around Bob: a smile, a good laugh, a warm hug, a kind word or a helping hand. Our loss of Bob is great but he will be a very special blessing for God. My deepest sympathy to his family, friends and peers at work. He was a very special person to all.

For the past seven years Bob and I tried to figure out the fly-fishing puzzle around here...from the perfect flies for finicky false albacore and pompano to the migratory habits of the Pensacola tarpon. Every year in early-June I would receive a call from a VERY excited Capt Bob saying the fish were in Apalachicola heading our way and should be here in a few weeks. "It's Tarpon Time, brother. Get ready!" he would say. Words cannot describe my sadness at losing him as a friend and colleague and at how I'll miss seeing his smiling face in that little yellow Maverick.

Bob, I feel like I know you even though we never met. Anne often talks of you at the hospital. Our offices are beside each other. She thinks the world of you, told me of all your adventures at your work. She loves you so much. I think the world of your sister. I"ll be meeting you one day. Peace be with you, Bob, and your family. Cathy (Durham, NC)

I had the honor and privilege to know Bob for the last 7 years I worked with him at the EPA. It was always refreshing to see boy in the morning or after a long day in the field he would have so much energy. I always enjoyed the fishing stories and the time we spent setting the hooks, I always thought of Bob as a good friend I will consider myself a lucky person to have known Bob.

I did not know Bob well, but whenever I ran into him, he always made my day a little brighter by flashing one of his big smiles and greeting me like I was an old friend. I know he will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to his loved ones!

My family and I had the privilege of spending many wonderful trips on the water with "Captain Bob." His enthusiasm was contagious.

I laughed every time he saw a blue heron, because he acted like it was the first one he had ever seen.

Didn't matter how big or small the fish--every one was a thrill for him and the people fishing with him.

He will be sadly missed by those of us who looked forward to a great Pensacola fishing trip and oysters at Peg Leg Pete's.

Our sympathy is with his friends and family in their time of loss.

Don't throw this one back, God. He's a keeper.
