Santiago Herrera Obituary
1989-2014
Santiago Herrera, 24, of Pensacola, FL passed away on Monday, January 20, 2014. Santiago was born on May 1, 1989 in New Orleans, LA.
Santiago and his family ultimately moved to Pensacola, FL where he grew up. He was a graduate of St. Michael's Interparochial School, Pensacola Catholic High School, and a 2011 graduate of Auburn University. Through the years, Santi was an avid soccer player throughout his life and enjoyed playing tennis as well. His love of sports helped fuel his love of working out and being healthy. Ever since 7th grade, Santi knew he wanted to be in the military, always proud to serve this country. He was a member of ROTC at Auburn. He loved to travel and studied in Barcelona for a semester in 2010, where he was able to put to use his trilingual skills. Santiago also traveled to numerous countries, such as Italy, Greece, Switzerland, France, Germany and others. Upon his graduation at Auburn, he completed his Army basic training and Officer Candidacy School at Ft. Benning, GA. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He then went on to complete military police school at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and became an Army reserve military police officer.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Matias Herrera.
Santiago is survived by German Herrera, his father; Rosie Herrera, his mother; Mariana Herrera, his sister; Saturia Herrera, his paternal grandmother; Jaime and Rosalba Castañeda, his maternal grandparents. He also has numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins who reside in Bogota, Colombia.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014 from 5-7pm at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 11am on Saturday, January 25, 2014. Inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Christopher Frasse, Robert Guilfoyle, Carlos Alberto Herrera, Patrick LaPorte, Brian Moyer and Kyle Ottley.
Because of his love of animals, donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Pensacola Humane Society, 5 N. "Q" St., Pensacola, FL 32505 or the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org

All memories that I have of Santi are fond ones. He was a great kid when I knew him, but we lost touch after St. Michael's, so I never knew the great man that he became. It saddens me that now I will never get that chance. His legacy lives on in the hundreds of people he touched in his time here on earth, and I hurt for those of his family and friends who feel the loss the most. I am besides myself with disbelief in the news of Santiago dying. How is this possible? My heart is aching! He came into my somewhat chaotic life two years ago. I had two great losses just shortly before meeting him. His huge smile caught my eye and I just had to say hello. When he spoke to me, I was hooked! He was kind, funny, goodlooking, compassionate, a great listener and a very proud man! We talked for hours! His deep, soothing voice and kind, wise words made a huge difference in my life. I met Lieutenant Herrera at Officer Candidate School, and although we were not close friends I can say that he was held in high regard by the whole class. He was a warm, competent, charismatic person with a great sense of humor - I seriously doubt anyone had anything bad to say about him the entire cycle. In a class that is designed to cause stress and discord among its students, that is saying a lot. On more than one occasion his positive attitude and humor helped me persevere through some of the darker days of OCS.
The world has lost a great, positive human being that was just beginning to make his mark. My heart goes out to the Herrera family for their loss.

Herrera, as we always called each other by our last names at OCS, had genuinely one of the most optimistic and positively infectious personalities. He could make misery into happiness and seemed to single handily make our platoon a better, brighter and more enjoyable force to be a part of.
I am blessed to have known him for a short while, and will be forever touched by his kind, funny and light spirit.

I am still in shock and disbelief. I don't know how this happened. You are someone I can't forget. I still think about the days of high school and can't help but smile. You were one my first friends at Catholic, and we grew close over the years. We sat together at lunch, and laughed the whole time. The soccer games and out of town trips were filled with memories I'll never forget. I remember like it was yesterday when we were seniors and you were my “senior assassin”. You even wrecked your car outside my house trying to make a quick getaway. I actually still have the pictures from your car's damage. You were a dear friend, and I always loved seeing you and your family when y'all came to Jerrys cajun.
The good times will never be forgotten, and you will remain in my heart. I miss you, sincerely. I wish we had talked more than the occasional “ Roll Tide, War Eagle” texts throughout college. I am proud to call you my friend and a patriot. I know you are at peace, but I still miss you and wish I could see you again. One day I will.

Herrera family, our hearts are broken over your loss. Santiago was like part of our family and a brother to both Chris and Matt. We will never forget his beautiful smile and love and dedication to our country! God bless all of you and Santi !
