Wayne Adams Obituary

Wayne Lawrence Adams

1953 - 2014

Wayne Lawrence Adams, 60, died at 11.30pm on Sunday, January 12, 2014, after a five month battle with lymphoma.

Born May 8, 1953, Wayne dedicated his life to his business, Adams Homes, and to his family, Brandon Adams (35), Bryan Adams (32) and wife Erin Adams, and Annie Malone (28) and husband Matt Malone. He was exceptionally close to his girlfriend, Amy Martin; his ex-wife, Holly Adams; and his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Ella Adams. Wayne is also survived by sisters Carol Frederick and Barbara Graff, nieces, nephews and other extended family members. He maintained a close group of friends within Adams Homes, and he had a handful of cherished friends from Pensacola and from his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. He also adored his two grandchildren, Emilia Adams (2) and Brody Malone (6 months), and his young Golden Retriever, Aspen (3).

Although Adams Homes thrived financially, Wayne led a modest life to the end, driving around in a ten-year-old Chevy Tahoe, living in the same three-bedroom house on Pensacola Beach, and buying almost all of his clothes from the Land's End catalog. His philosophy of life and business was "Keep it simple, stupid," and he preached to everyone around him the dangers of complexity and overreach. Wayne never owned a computer or sent an email.

Wayne's primary enjoyment in life came from having people around him develop in a positive way. He was not an easy boss, and he was an exceptionally tough negotiator who prized loyalty above all else, but his feeling of success and accomplishment ultimately came from contributing to the success of others. The net outcome was an extremely tight culture at Adams Homes.

Not one for luxury, Wayne's favorite restaurant around town until the end was the Waffle House. The smiling staff tolerated him on even his last visits, when he couldn't stomach a bite.

Wayne's favorite things in life were going skiing every year with his close friend Ken Kleinschmidt and a rotating cast from New Orleans and Pensacola; hanging out on his pontoon boat with Amy, his kids, or Mark Braxton; drinking Jack Daniels and 7-Up with Collier Merrill or his work buddies at Fish House; plotting business strategy with his sons, his beloved brother Don Adams, his mastermind CFO Brian Stringfellow, or his son-in-law and righthand man, Matt Malone; relaxing in his Lay-Z-Boy at his beach house, watching crime procedurals, comedies, or inspirational movies; or lounging on the beach near his home or in Destin, Florida.

Funeral Services will take place at 2:00 PM, Friday, January 17, 2014 at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin one hour prior to service time.

Flowers are appreciated or you may wish to consider a donation to the Lymphoma Research Society in Wayne's memory.

Wayne never met a stranger. He had a kind heart and spoke dearly of those he loved. I had the great fortune to sit next to him on the airplane a few years ago on his way home from a visit to Costa Rica with his girlfriend and her family and it was a joy sitting next to him. I am very saddened to see that he has passed. I had hoped to meet him and his girlfriend in Pensacola sometime since we were coeds at Ole Miss during the same time. My husband and I will still come by the restaurant to introduce ourselves and to toast Wayne with a bourbon and 7-Up.

Inspiring leader, devoted father, and the very definition of friend, Wayne Adams' assemblage of people from every walk of life grew individually and collectively in ways that most never imagined possible. With an extraordinary ability to communicate warmly, personally, and effectively with folks from any culture or background, Wayne's endearing and sincere encouragement and sharing left everyone with a positive take away. He could teach without preaching; direct without commanding; and compel you to lead without fear of failure....a gift of incredible value.

I've been blessed to have been a part of the "Adams Family" for twelve years and can testify without pause that Wayne is one of the finest men I've every known. The manifestations of Wayne's presence on this globe are the extraordinary children he loved and raised; the hundreds of employees whose lives he enriched; and the thousands of customers and clients to whom he committed his personal and professional life. A man of integrity, character, wit, and generosity whose contributions to our society will be enjoyed for generations.

From the bottom of my heart....thank you Wayne for your trust, leadership and friendship. And to Matt, Annie, Brian, Erin, Brandon, Amy and the rest of the family, please know that I and hundreds of others are there if you need us....just like Wayne was for us.

January 23, 2014

I was part of the Adams family for sixteen years and Wayne Adams was the best leader imaginable . May you rest in peace Wayne.

Sincerely,

Rest in peace Wayne. My wife was part of the Adams family for nearly 20 years. She never had a bad thing to say about Wayne. She did get a chuckle at how laid back he was, like nodding off during the annual goal meeting. Not only did he treat her as a friend but every time I talked to him he treated me as if I had known him my entire life. Those will be some big shoes to fill.
Rest in peace.

I have known and admired Wayne since 1990 while working for GE Appliances. I had many business lunches, dinners and meetings over the years with Wayne and Robert Harris. I witnessed Wayne starting Adams Homes in 1991 and building his company to what it is today. Wayne was a loyal customer and friend of G.E. Appliances during my career. Adams Homes built my daughter a home in Fairhope in 2012. I was actively involved during the construction. It was great to experience this and see the fruits of his labor from the home buyers point of view. Wayne's years of dedication paid off. It is a fine home and everything went very smoothly. I am deeply saddened by Wayne's passing and my heart goes out to his family, close friends and his largest family..Adams Homes. All of you are in my prayers. Wayne was a man of integrity and character and I am sure he will be greatly missed.

This is simple. Wayne was neighbor of mine for a time when I lived on Pensacola Beach. He was next door. So when I express this, I do so with absolute certainty. Wayne Adams epitomized and defined the meaning of being "one good dude." As simple as that may seem, just those three monosyllabic words pretty much sum up the man that was Wayne. And that was my usual response when asked now or before, "Do you know Wayne?"

"Yeah," I'd say with a smile. "He is one good dude."

So there is no need for an in-depth rummage into the complicated, bigger-than-life personality of the uber-successful entrepreneur, the builder, the businessman, and I'm sure a text book could be written about that part of his life, at the core it was just very, very simple. Wayne was big, gregarious, kind, loved his family, and in the simple understanding that we really aren't here for a long time, he was going to make the most of every minute that he was. If he invited you along and you didn't go, you should of. If you did, you'll know what those that didn't missed - a damn good time.

Of course there are many memories and stories of those good times, recounts of Wayne's travels, jacuzzi parties on the deck, enjoying life and the fruits of his success, which he did as well as anyone that has ever lived. No one who knew him would have been surprised to spot Wayne at a big time event, or thought they saw him on TV in the gallery at 18 of Augusta, or at the Superbowl, possibly even near court side at Wimbledon or the U.S. Open. "Yep, that was probably Wayne." That's what he did - and always with a laugh and a wide grin.

Mourned by a wonderful family and children he often spoke so proudly of, he will be dearly missed by all who had the fortune to know him, and especially missed by Aspen - truly, a best friend.
